My diet is sparse but healthy. If I cannot give up the alcohol - what can I do?

If you drink a lot every day and can't stop, you need help. Talk to your doc. If not, eventually you will suffer with complications.

Hi,
you have to want to stop, if you do and you cant do it alone then you need to see your gp and they will be able to offer some help

Hi Pythov, hoping this find you well. Firstly welcome along to forum & I hope you find it useful, are you newly diagnosed and what form of diabetes have you been diagnosed with?

Great to see your asking this question as I guess like myself this is a daily challenge that you have probably lived with for a while. I'm also quite sure many comments here will direct you to your GP & other services which we know exist, but none of which I'm sure will really help you address the questions you have.

I have been diabetic for fifteen years and have a genetic form of type two known as MODY. I have drunk heavily for many years and now have some form of grip on the problem but sure it's there and again & again I find the old devil with me.

As a diabetic alcohol will affect your blood sugar levels (do you test?) while your drinking and afterwards for quite a number of hours and permanently if you drink 24/7. I have found some forms of alcohol will affect my sugars more adversely than others, wine & cider to a lesser extent than say spirits, real ale or larger but over a period of time it will all do your nervous system no good which is already under attach by the diabetes, but we don't need the dangers spelling out do we.

Try and eat a little more and small and regular is good but I'm going to say it I know that wreaks the buzz. I'm finding it a challenge to really disuse this on such a one sided basis so in the top right of the form page it is possible to mail/msg people and invite you to get in touch if you fancy. Best regards Stu

Alcohol in terms of dry, red wines and spirits should lower sugar levels. Can't see much wrong with drinking these. Remember those low bg levels after a bender and ravenously hungry, it's all down to low blood sugar. I knock a bottle of wine back a night and since I've cut the carbs don't suffer hangovers. I'm not suggesting that drinking to excess is a good thing, but I wish the diabetic nurses would not bracket alcohol with carbohydrates, they are not the same thing.

Not only will alcohol affect your blood sugar readings but it can also damage your pancreas to the extent it no longer works at all., which will then cause an even bigger problem than diabetes alone.
You need to be getting as much help as you can before damage is irreversible

Hi Pythov, welcome to the forum

You say, "if" I cannot give up alcohol.

Try to cut down gradually, but if you find that your are being honest with yourself and a addiction is not going away:banghead::bookworm::bookworm: find support.
This is one contact: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/alcohol/Pages/Alcoholsupport.aspx

Alcohol in moderation is fine, yet depends on how you control your diet.
Your diet being sparse yet healthy indicates that you can control and adjust your drinking habits to a moderate level.
Have you tried to stop drinking or is that a daft question. I am one of those lucky ones that just gave it up,like I did cigarettes. yet 25 years on I still miss that first draw of a cig;

Best of luck as I know it is not easy.
Roy:)

If you cannot give up drinking I suppose you will drink until you die from it. It happens quite often, particularly with diabetics.

If you want to stop drinking there are the anonymous ones. They have all been through the mill and will know where you come from. They survived the loss of alcohol. You should talk to them.

this breaks my heart, my diabetic dad killed himself with alcohol, nothing anyone could have said would have helped him stop, if he could turn back time and stop drinking, would he? i dunno, my mum is terribly lonely without him, i dont believe in an afterlife but if im wrong and hes watching her suffer, i reckon he would have regrets, do your best

best of luck
