I hate the phrase......

Its only diabetes. My daughter and I got told this last week by a member of a uniformed group staff because her niece has lots of medical complications. I really cannot be bothered to explain the ins and outs of it all. I did point out however that where her niece has had her complications all her life, my daughter had 10 years of normality before the T1 truck trundled into ours. I know people have far worse conditions, but when they say that phrase to me, I just see bright red

They are ignorant, ignore them.

Thats right..its only from ignorance people say stupid things like that. If in the future they are unlucky enough to be struck with diabetes, they'll soon change their point of view.

'Only' diabetes my a*se !!! !!!

She would think differently if she had a child or neice with diabetes. Take a deep breath. A couple of people said that to me about my type 2 diabetes and I wished I hadn't told them but they asked how I was and I had just been diagnosed.

I hate that phrase too.

I feel its a lack of knowledge and education on the General Public's part.

Whilst we are on the subject of phrases we hate, one of the most common things said to me when I was first diagnosed (bearing in mind I was 19...) "Oh, I know someone who died from Diabetes." Now, dont get me wrong, I know that if you dont look after yourself, you die from complications (i see enough of it in my job...) but isn't it scary enough being diagnosed with something you're going to have for the rest of your life, without someone ghoul predicting your untimely death?

Sorry, rant over.

what about 'oh, you can't have this cake then can you?' or similar!! I usually have an extra big slice when someone says that  I know, I know, I'm lucky, type 1, can count the carbs but still annoying when someone makes the assumption that all diabetics MUST avoid all sugar! I usually respond to statements like that with 'can you have it? yes? then so can I!'

Speaking of which, I remember being astounded on my DAFNE course by a lady showing us her daily meal plan and she had cereal with a spoonful of sugar on it?! Opened up a whole new world for me seeing as I had not eaten raw sugar for 24 years!!

I can better that Debloubed, I met a type 1 who had 3 teaspoons of sugar in his coffee and tea, and drank around 7-8 mugs a day. I asked him what his bg readings were like, said he didn't know because he rarely tested and not had any test strips for 3 months!

I am not making this up.

nowt as strange as folk Nige! My sugar lady had good BG numbers as she had been taught to 'allow' for the sugar pre-DAFNE but still, she was walking a fine line in my opinion! :P she also suffered from crashing lows post meal which was explained by her over compensating for the sugar, never occured to her to leave it off her cereal  good news is, now she's DAFNE compliant she can count for the sugar and enjoy her weetabix!

'Can't see the wood for the trees' springs to mind here!

Its interesting that some people, no matter what continue with their ways despite jeopardising their health. Most breakfast cereals are sweet enough without added sugar, I have never put sugar on my children's cereal, and they don't take it in their tea/coffee either.

As you say, there's some strange folk around! :)

Actually the asorbtion rate of a teaspoon of sugar is slowed down quite a bit when on your breakfast cereal... A piece of cake would have a lot greater impact on the BG... As long as one has allowed for it's carb content, then makes no difference...

The ladies post meal hypo, most likely not to have anything to do with her sugar... More likely cause by either her carb ratio being out, or her background insulin being out

I take no notice of other peoples comments, but in truth I am likely to look up and say 'just diabetes' as to me there are many other conditions that are a lot worse to life with than diaebtes, even though yes I am diabetic I'm not ILL, I have a medical condition that means I have to look after myself on a daily bases etc...

exactly! she wasn't counting for the sugar, she was guessing how much insulin to take and getting it all wrong  in other words, she didn't have a clue :P my point was she was eating raw sugar which was something I hadn't done for over 20 years!

A couple of years back, I picked up the wrong coffee at work and took a mouthful, I had to spit it back out. My work colleague liked his coffee with extra sugar, I swear I have never tasted anything so awful, I couldn't taste the coffee, just the intense sweetness of the sugar. I really don't know how they can tell when they are given a inferior brand of coffee or tea, as all you can taste is the sugar. :o

maybe that's why they add the sugar Nigel, to cover up the taste of 'bad' coffee?!
