I am not on tablets yet, my readings are normally between 5.6-7.0, but how can I have diabetes with readings like this? the nurse said that several samples of blood show diabetes. :silent:

Well, it takes just two fasting readings of 7.0 to diagnose diabetes; you are considered diabetic when you meet the somewhat arbitrarily chosen diagnostic criteria even if blood sugar is not sky high all the time.

Nurses should not be making a diagnosis. They may venture an opinion. I'll never forget one nurse telling me 4 hours before my father died that 'he's fine, nothing to worry about'.

I only ever see a nurse never a doctor. It was the nurse that rang me to tell me I had diabetes.

If the doctor has made a medical diagnosis and authorised the nurse to tell the patient, that's OK. He's the one responsible for writing up the medical records, the one who is legally responsible, the one who for example an insurance company would write to and so on. On any form requiring it, it will ask who is your doctor, not who is your nurse. It was very common at one time for nurses to be asked about an illness and the standard response was always 'the doctor will tell you'. Other than a general reply, they are not allowed to give a medical diagnosis from their own interpretation of results.

My reading are usually 5.6 to 7.0 and I definitely have diabetes. The reason they are relatively low is because I minimise my carbohydrate intake. A non- diabetic should not be getting fasting levels of 7.0. What time do you take your readings? Are they before or (how long) after meals? How much carbohydrate do you eat?

It'll be easier for us to give an (admittedly unqualified, but probably as knowledgable as your diabetic nurse) view if we have a bit more context.

My doctor told me two fasting blood tests of above 6 meant diabetes, from then on I was on meds and have been stable type 2 for the last 3 years.
