Since January I have been low carbing (usually 50-70g) and have lost 12.5kg in weight. But all my hard work hasn't made any difference whatsoever to my BG levels.

In the middle of March I found out that my HBa1c has gone up just a couple of points to 47. Not very high, I know.

Any ideas as to why my change in diet and weight loss hasn't improved the situation?

Not that I'm not delighted with the weight loss, of course. It's great. :D But I'd like to get my BG under control. It's usually about 8 first thing in the morning and I can't seem to bring it down.

I don't come on here so often now as I find it quite depressing when people post that they're getting improvements after just a week or so of low-carbing. :(

Hi, Lasermum :)

In your case the cold weather and with your daughter having some of her events cancelled(something about adrenaline and stress affecting bg levels) could contribute to your variations.

I am not very clever when it comes to diet issues.

Have you tried a 2nd meter test on your other hand at the same time.( With me my other hand tends to read lower, I only do this test when I get a high read, like this weekend)

Any way you have done brill, and you know what control is about.

Best of luck, and keep up the work being a great Mum.

Roy. :)

Hi Lasermum dont stop coming here just because some people claim to be doing better than you, we really are all different and no one can compare themselves accurately to anyone else as we will all have different amounts of insulin resistance and some will have impaired pancreatic function as well.

47 or 6.5% in old money is incredibly good and many members here would love to see an Hba1c like that so dont loose heart these things can take time and not everyone can get instant results.

Your numbers will probably start to drop naturally if you keep to your diet but if they dont it may be that you will need to add some extra medication to see better results. Whilst some can do without few manage to achieve and maintain very good numbers without medication. It could be that you may need insulin, you may be LADA or T1.5 but you probably just need more time to settle into a routine that suits your lifestyle.

Dont despair your numbers are very good and just because a few members have better doesnt make them any better than you, it just makes them different, thats all :D

It took ages for sugar levels to improve after I started low carbing. I had to adjust all my insulins so that I didn't have hypos or hypers. My diet before wasn't particularly high carb, but there was still a fair bit of adjusting to do. I also found that as I lost weight my insulin requirements changed. All of this meant that it was months before I saw any real improvements in my control

Stick at it. You're doing really well so far and the better control will follow soon.

Thanks for your encouragement everyone, I really need it at the moment - there's a lot going on in my life that's causing a lot of stress in the last few weeks.

Sid, I have a sneaky feeling that I'm not Type 2. I sometimes question whether I actually have diabetes or whether there is something else causing raised BS levels. They say that diabetes is progressive but I hardly see any change - either improvement or deterioration (not that I'm complaining about no deterioration!) It doesn't seem to matter whether I ignore it and eat what I like or if I take great care over my diet. Very confusing. :***:

Anyway, thanks for all the support. It is really appreciated.

:)

Hi. It must be disappointing having lost so much weight not to have seen a reduction in BS. Although there is a complete range of different diabetes types and outcomes, in general a T1 or T1.5 will not have a high BMI or will have lost weight around diagnosis as the body doesn't have enough insulin to convert glucose for use. Most T2s will have a high BMI but that is not always true and is due to excess insulin thru insulin resistance. You mention stress and that can raise BS so is probably not helping your levels. You do appear to be really low-carbing and as Sid says it should at least continue to help with weight loss, albeit slowly, and reduce any insulin resistance. Your HBa1C level of 47 is not bad so don't worry about that. Metformin is often added to help insulin resistance and a little BS reduction so your GP may offer this. It's a good, safe drug so do take it if offered. Let us know how you get on.

Hi, A few questions:
1) How do you know you are eating so few carbs?
To get as low as you are saying would mean absolutely no sugar at all, no bread, wheat, beans pulses etc. to get down to 50-70g of carbs is really really hard. I know because I do it everyday and have done for three months. Carbs Hide absolutely everywhere. There is a fantastic book called
http://www.amazon.com/Get-Sugar-Out-Sim ... 0517886537

Every time I mention it here, an admin deletes it, so I hope you get to see it before they take it off.

2) DO you use any hand creams? Cleaning products? Bath scents? If there is anything on your skin at all? If so it will taint your reading

3) Is it possible your meter is reading on the side of caution? I think all those meters are shi*te.

4) Are you stressed? My readings are off the Richter scale when stressed whatever i eat.

Not sure if any of that helps.
