I wonder why it is

That the big toe on my left foot has been hurting like hell for several weeks now with what I think is the onset of Gout. But I didn't notice the cut at the base of the toe until I saw the blood when I happened to look down cause I can't feel it at all. Weird.

Not just a nick either.

I suggest you make an appointment with Gp or diabetic nurse as soon as possible, there has to be a reason why you didn't feel it, possibly poor circulation? Neither should be ignored as further complications may develop which you don't want.

oh thats a bit scary I´d imagine... , well then you need to have your feet checked very often then, maybe have your spouse look beneath them every day ... and check your shoes too, so you are sure there is nothing in them that can hurt your feet without you knowing it... I was told that diabetics needs shoes that closes all around the foot so that nothing can get into the shoe, because we´ll probably not realize that our feet are hurt before too late...

I got a little angry when they said I shouldn´t even take a longer foot-bath.(no longer than 5-8 minutes) because of risk of fungus too and never wear sandals anymore.... well I´ll decide that anyway... but in a more advanced situation it seem to be good suggestions...

Thanks for your replies and yes it's a little scary. Thing was I had had a bath so stupidly was walking about bare foot something I never normally do, so will drop in to the surgery and get it looked at or make appointment. I do have PN but it's mainly in the other leg and foot or so I thought.

I stupidly dropped a Pyrex dish in the kitchen. Boy oh boy do they go with a bang. So, just to compound my stupidity, having cleaned up (I thought), I continued walking around bare foot as I do. I wasn't aware of the piece of glass lodged in my foot until I showered the next morning and then it wouldn't stop bleeding. I ended up in A&E where they were able to remove a sliver of glass.
 
I do think you need to get it looked at as soon as possible. Hope you can get it sorted soon.
 
If you get gout my friend .. you will certainly know what it is without having to be told!

I had it and the old pictures of someone with a big red toe and being very vocal if it was being knocked is very much what it is like. In fact even trying to put a sock or anything on my foot was near to impossible.
As for the not feeling the cut I think the rest of the guys have said it..

Yes, I definitely agree that you really must get your toe looked at tomorrow, ie before the weekend. If I may suggest, please keep a clean, dry dressing on your wound, keep it dry and keep your foot up on a stool, so you leg is level.

It's really important that this wound is given the best possible chance to heal quickly, without infection. I'm confident that the Nurse/GP you see tomorrow will (should) suggest the same. Hopefully, they will then keep an eye on it until they're confident it's healed OK.

Do you have someone at home who can keep an eye on your feet, seeing as you appear not to be feeling such injuries? If not, a daily check, using a mirror perhaps, might be an idea.

As already mentioned, please do post back what the 'professional' advice and treatment, and view etc, is tomorrow. Take care :)

Let us know what gp and nurse says tomorrow. Get it seen asap! ;)
 
Hope you get on the mend and quick, anything going on with the feet worries me.
 
I went to the surgery today asked to see the DN but no one available today and as it is new years weekend had to book appointment for Wednesday morning so thought kill two birds one stone am having bloods done for diabetes review at same time. I am keeping wound clean and antiseptic and covered with plaster so should be OK till then if not there is the hobble in clinic at local hospital.
Will take special care as know some one who lost his big toe recently due to sepsis after stepping on a nail.
