IBS and Diabetes

Hi Mep, I'm sorry to hear of all the problems you have had. I do find the same, tend to get the 'morning rush' and the decision of whether I can manage to get of the house and to work before I need the loo. I'll look at the FODMAP diet and see whether it can help. The list of food triggers that affect bowel movement both diarrhoea or constipation seems to grow every week. I've also started to get acid reflux as well. Originally my metformin was reduced as I was taking 1000mg in the morning and my stomach couldn't tolerate that so I was reduced down to 1000 Mg and 5 mg Saxagliptin. Unfortunately my BG levels increased and in the end I was moved back on to 2000 mg and I take them after my evening meal. It's great when I'm on holiday, the first thing I look at when I'm touring round is where the toilets are!!!

I find that my bowels are much more active first thing in the morning than at any other time (I think this is natural/normal). So I would suggest making time to use the toilet at home before work. One thing my gastroenterologist recommends is allowing time to use the toilet for as long as necessary and to relax and read a book or something. I like to spend as little time in there as possible so this is hard for me to do, lol.

I have had acid reflux for many years. In my case it is worse whenever I am constipated. I believe the bowel signals that it doesn't want any more food, so the stomach does the same and it contracts and pushes food back up the oesophagus. There are many things that can cause reflux, and some tips I could give you for managing it. What do you think might be causing it in your case? Could it be a drug side effect? I encourage you to raise the matter with your doctor too.

Yeh I run to the toilet many times in the morning at times and I don't have time to wait when I have to get to work. It can create a bit of anxiety for me. My ibs is definitely worse when the rest of my conditions are playing up. The main problem with my GI tract is predominantly that it doesn't move properly.

My GI tract moves too slowly but I have read about medications that can regulate the muscle contractions of the bowel, for people with IBS that tends towards diarrhoea.

I went to the doctors and he has taken me off metformin for two weeks. Then if there is an effect to go on to one tablet of 1000 mg to see if I can tolerate that. Within two days of coming off the metformin the stomach upset had gone and the trapped wind had as well. He did prescribe a tablet for the acid reflux and peppermint oil capsules for the wind. Have just started on the 1000mg only. Not sure what they can replace the metformin with as have tried control with 1000 mg and 5mg Saxagliptin and it didn't work. Anybody have any ideas as to what the doctor may suggest? I see him again in two weeks.
