.. And what to do about it.

I am low carbing at the moment, so was shocked to see my pre supper reading at 9.0 . Its normally between 5.5 and 6.0 .
That was at nearly 7pm and my last food was some low carb cold sausages in 2 slices of burgen bread at 3:15 .

I suppose I could have been very high all day, as I normally only test mornings and around my main meals, but I didn't feel high.

So could this be a liver dump? How do you tell?

Hi Swimmer, dont know how you would know whether you had a liver dump unless you tested often throughout the day but a few things to consider:

Had you undertaken any exercise that day? even walking, housework etc?

Are you sure your sausages were low carb and didnt have a breadcrumb binder which is common in sausages?

Is it possible you have/had some infection that may have temporarily raised your bg levels?

Cant think of anything else at the moment, but there are many things can can catch you out, diabetes and bg levels is not an exact science which is why I always advocate plenty of bg level testing especially in the first year or until you get on top of your control and know roughly what to expect from a particular food or type of exercise but even then things can still throw up the odd surprise

Hey Swimmer2

Would doubt it's a liver dump unless you measured pretty soon after doing some strenuous exercise.

In order I'd suspect...

The sausages as Sid said check them out. If you still have the packet look at the carb count.
The strip. Some test strips are just screwy. If I get a weird reading that I think "can't be right" I do it again from a different finger.
The size of your blood sample. On some machines if you only just get to the minimum sample size it will give you a high reading
Your immune system. You could be fighting off some bug or virus without feeling any ill effects.

In any event don't worry. It was just one reading :)

housework ???

I had exercised in the morning - usual swim - but nothing else.

The sausages are the lowest carb I could find - 1g for 100g. I should have tried another test rather than stomping around the kitchen in a grump. The sample size is a possible as my fingertips are taking quite a battering now.

The other possible is that I've been reducing my long acting Lantus and perhaps the effect of this is now starting to show itself during the following day. Hmmn.. lots to think on as ever.

thanks for the feedback guys.

Hi,
the title of this posting made me giggle - only here could we know what that really means! Ha Ha!

As for your reading, don't be too alarmed. Sometimes we all get a freak reading, often for little reason. Our bodies are so unpredictable even with the best of care. It may be you reacted to the bread more than you expected maybe. If I got a reading like that, I would restrict carbs very strictly for the remainder of that day and see what the fasted level in the morning reads. Good luck, let's hope you are soon back to your normal excellent levels.

Hi Swimmer2, just to let you know that I love bread and do dreadfully miss it, but even if I eat only 1 slice of Burgen bread my B/G rises considerably but then I am on diet and exercise only and not insulin but just a thought!, Debra x

It's just another one of those things I'm going to have to test with - maybe this weekend when I haven't got to worry about work. Hope it's not the Burgen bread because the freezer's full of the stuff.
