Does that make them type 1? I always thought once diagnosed as type 2 then you are always type 2 and it's just that you've progressed to needing insulin. Had a discussion with another diabetic who was diagnosed as type 2 in his 40s and was put on insulin years later. He now believes he is classed as type 1. I thought you were only type 1 if you need insulin from the outset. I know it doesn't really make any difference, I'm just a bit curious

Nope, how you are treated doesn't determine your type of diabetes.

You can be type 1 and honeymooning or LADA & not require insulin because you're still producing your own insulin.

You can be type 2 and not be producing any of your own insulin so you are an insulin dependent type 2.

It is important to determine if you are being prescribed insulin because you are producing insufficient insulin or because you have poor glucose control...

Once a type 2, always a type 2 M, unless someone has been misdiagnosed. R has been on insulin since she was 15 or 16, and she is a type 2 - it is a common error, often because the HCP's don't point out the difference! xx

What is the difference? The person I was discussing it with no longer produces insulin.
