if i get diagonsed with diabetes this week by the doctor will i get drugs to calm it down or do they just adjust your diet? which means could take weaks or the blurred vision to go away?

If you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes you may be encouraged to try diet and exercise first. Come back and people will explain what works for them and general guidelines to assist in your management. If you are given drugs this does not mean that you will be able to manage this condition straight away. It takes a while for the drugs to start working alongside an eating plan.
Try not to worry too much as we will be able to help you.

The first thing is - don't panic! Most of us on here have diabetes, Types 1 and 2 and a few in the middle, and we're all still enjoying life and doing most of the things we've always wanted to do. Some of us take the drugs - many don't.

You're not going to drop dead or even be really sick immediately, so try to keep calm. Do a bit of reading around on here and on the main site so you get some idea of what all the terms mean.

If you're having a fasting blood test on Tuesday morning you need to have nothing but water for 12 hours previously. This is not as bad as it sounds, when you think about it! The only thing that really gets me is, no cup of coffee first thing. I take a flask into the surgery with me

Good luck! Come back and let us know how you've got on, and once you get a diagnosis we'll be able to help you in lots of different ways. We've all been there!

And don't panic!

Hi, great advice from viv, dont panic , just take it all one step at a time , and pop back let us all know how you have gone on, ask any questions you wish to and someone will help, support, you along. Anna.x :)

NOT SURE IF THIS IS RELEVANT BUT PROBLEMS STARTED 3-4 weeks ago with blurred vision, felt a few more things before last week felt fine again but now eyes playing up again, blurred vision, sore at corner of eye beside nose, headaches and vision isnt good in right eye when i close left eye

I know this may sound strange, but have you had your blood pressure tested? I only ask as i have high blood pressure and also get headaches and blurred vision. I am not medically trained and could be way off the mark but thought it worth mentioning.

You'll only get drugs if doc thinks you're at a level that needs them, they care about budgets so you wont be given anything you don't need. Fingers crossed for you but really there's no panic I still win lots of games in the local badminton league so it's not the end of everything!

Hi Peedledj,
Welcome to the forum! Drugs are 'part' of the action plan of most docs. Specifically a drug called Glucophage or Metformin. Your symptoms sound more blood pressure-like than diabetes like.. But I'm not doctor. If it's diabetes then the meds will take a while to start working. These days most of the research out there says that using insulin 'first' and not as the last resort -- is the best approach to gaining quick control. Many people can then come OFF the insulin after several months once they've adjust their diet and brought their A1c numbers down to an acceptable limit. So don't be afraid to ask your doc about that option. They don't usually "OFFER" it at first because they figure people will be afraid of needles. But my doctor was thrilled that I educated myself and knew that insulin was a good 'first resort'. And don't think 'flu shot needles' (long and big) - these pen needles are only a few centimeters long and so think you can't even see them. The finger pricks we do to check our blood sugar actually have more of a pinch than an insulin injection. You'll be fine. Let us know when you have the results of your tests. And try to relax. You're 99.9% NOT dying.. :D
