Type of diabetes
Type 1
hey everyone my name is Emily and I am 15 years old, I have quite a lot of health issues. My aunt is a type 1 diabetic so we know a lot of the symptoms. This is Probaly irrelevant but it started with my kidneys, they have been leaking blood and protein into my urine for over a year now since a kidney infection. So obviously my kidneys aren't great. I was admitted to hospital with this and they still aren't sure as I have so many odd symptoms . Lately, within the past week I've noticed something very strange, my mum pointed it out first actually. But I've been excessively sweaty which is very unlike me and my sweat has the strangest smell, the only way I can describe it is like a lime, kind of fruity. For about 3 nights I was up ALL night with an extreme headache, tummy ache and nausea! And felt so unbearably lightheaded! I notice a slight increase in thirst but nothing dramatic but I definitely have a huge increase in urination as I counted I went 7 times in an hour and a half with my urine having a very strong odour. Added on to this I get extremely hungry, especially at night although after being weighed at hospital I've lost a whole stone in a week even though I'm eating a lot? So we decided that I should do a finger prick test.
So yesterday night I waited for 3 and a half hours after I ate. And my results said that my blood sugar was 10.3 mmol... my auntie said that is high. So we retested it this morning, so it was a fasting test and my result was 5.6. So I ate a spoonful of cheerios, and I instantly got a awful headache and dizzy so 5 minutes after the last test we retested it, my levels went up to 7.1. I'm using the accu chek. And last week we went to the hospital and Gp and they said because there isn't enough glucose in my urine, it means it's ok? And both of them refuse to do a blood test! Everything is getting worse and I don't know what to do! Do you have to have glucose in you're urine to have diabetes. I actually have a little bit, in between negative and a trace. But I dint see why they can't do a simple blood test? Thanks everyone

Hi @Emilyxxx :)

Sorry you're feeling so ill. I think you should go back to your doctor and ask for further tests to discover what's making you feel so bad. For example, could it be to do with your kidney problem?

Type 1 isn't usually diagnosed with a urine test, although sometimes the urine is tested too. A blood test is more usual. Has your doctor done any blood tests at all to check your blood sugar level? Can you insist they do?

Although some families do have more than one person with Type 1 in, many people with Type 1 don't have any close relatives with it. So don't assume that that's the problem. Push for some more tests and get some answers so that you can feel better.

Edited to add that I don't know what the sweatiness could be, but that's a pretty definite symptom to talk to your doctor about, so hopefully that will help them make a diagnosis.

Your frequent urination might be to do with a kidney or bladder issue, so it's important to get seen. The fact your urine is very concentrated could be due to,dehydration or simply that you're going so,often. The frequent urination of Type 1 is more to do with sheer volume and is not usually concentrated like that.

Hello! Thank you so much for the reply! The doctors don't seem to understand what's going on with my kidney! I forgot to mention my urine also contains a high level of leukocytes and bilirubin as well as blood and protein. I really don't know why they won't do a test. When we asked him he abruptly replied with just 'no'
Do you think my blood sugar levels are slightly high? We will monitor it and my mum seems keen to get it tested. And no my doctor has not done any tests to check my boood sugar level. Again thank you so much for the reply!

Also to mention I have a high specific gravity reading in my urine which I think measures it's concentration! Thanks :)

Have you seen a kidney specialist? Do you know if your doctor has checked other things like your liver function and gall bladder, etc? If you haven't seen a kidney specialist, I'd push to see one. That's what I'd do if I was having these problems.

I'm not a medical person in any way - I just have Type 1. As a comparison, my blood sugar was 25 when I was diagnosed with Type 1. Usually Type 1 is pretty obvious as the person has high blood sugars like mine or even higher.

Generally, a venous (from the vein) blood test result of 11.1 or higher needs further investigation. Finger prick tests aren't as accurate as a proper blood test.

Perhaps your doctor has already ruled out Type 1? I suggest you speak to him/her and explain your kidney problems and how ill it's making you feel. Remember you can always see a different doctor if you're unhappy with the one you're seeing.

In the children's ward , which is where I'm being treated my consultant briefly introduced us to a Dr who does a bit of work for peadiatric kidney issues. And orderd an ultrasound Yes, I've had so many blood tests. My albumin is high with a very slightly elevated CRP. I have tachycardia. My kidney function seems ok ATM but my liver function as we've just found out sometimes shows abnormal readings, which he said is normal in someone who is very ill. but he feels no further investigation of anything is needed My heart rate is irregular and very fast. And I have high blood pressure. I think the reason the GP doesn't want to test my blood sugar levels is because I'm under the care of a consultant in the hospital. I'm having an abdominal ultrasound, also sorry if graphic but I'm EXTREMELY constipated. I'm 100% sure my blood glucose levels have never been tested. As far as I'm aware there's a lot of signe that are just being overlooked by doctors as having protein and blood in you're urine I'm sure isn't very normal! We are monitoring my blood sugar with a finger pricker and if the readings are still showing high, we both think it would be beneficial to go back to the GP. As I think with everything the longer you leave it the worse it would become! Thanks again

It's really good that you're under the care of a hospital. It sounds very stressful not knowing what's wrong. I really hope you get some answers to your kidney/liver problems.

I'm so sorry you're suffering these health problems : ( Please take care and look after yourself. Do let us know how you get on and if you get any answers.

Sending you my best wishes for much improved health in the future.
