I'm type 1... Or am I?

Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to read my first posting.

I've been Type 1 for about 8 years now and it's been controlled by Levemir and Novorapid. Despite a few rocky months and weight gain it's been a positive experience.

However, my local Diabetes clinic has now suggested they may think I'm type 2, particularly as my Mum was diagnosed with T2 about 2 years before I was.

I realise not all type 2 rely on just tablets but I'm slightly concerned what potential outcomes this may lead to.

Can there be such a crossover, or could it be potential misdiagnosis in the first place.

I'd welcome any guidance. Ta! :)

hya, it could be either,
on diagnosis they werent sure what i was :? there are certain blood tests that can tell them what type you are, if mentioned again i would ask for the tests :D

I suppose my biggest concern - and I realise this is not a hard and fast rule - but if I'm T2 there's more chance that I'll have a leaning towards taking tablets and not insulin.

Being a big chap, I take 180 units of Levemir a day and about 25 units of Novarapid per meal (using carb counting on a 2:1 ratio).

When I was originally diagnosed I lost a lot of weight and had blood sugars of about 21. Now I keep a very tight control - sometimes borderline hypos - with an HBA1C about the 6.5 mark, though my more recent result was 7.1

Usually I've dealt with control very well but this potential change is concerning me somewhat.

you do take a lot of insulin,
if you have the tests and it turns out you are type 2 they may leave you on insulin, you need to discuss your fears with your health care provider :D

If a T2 is teated with insulin, that's ususlly ok. Treating a T1 on orals is the one that leads to trouble
