increasing HbA1c levels

My results show an upward trend; now 61mmol/mol and my occasional early morning fasted BG results are also trending in the wrong direction. Apart from ageing, now 82, there has been no relevant change in lifestyle; still riding the bike for 6-8 hours/week, gym sessions 2/ week, limited carb intake, wine consumption reducing moderately but probably more toast and marmalade. Metformin 1g/day.
Q1: are there any significant changes that I should consider?
Q2: what are the HbA1c thresholds that might trigger an increase in Metformin intake or a switch to insulin medication?

Hi

If you're changing a few things you may simply be seeing the results of those changes. For instance, alcohol serves to suppress blood glucose levels as it stops the liver topping up your glucose. If you've reduced alcohol, you might be seeing a rebound here, and your liver's just adding more glucose (this would probably show most in fasted levels). Similar issue with "more toast and marmalade" - both high in carb and sugar and you might therefore be giving your body a bigger glucose task to deal with.

As far as I know (and the Handbook of Diabetes is silent on this) there are no fixed HbA1c "thresholds" for changing medication - this is something you would need to talk to your prescriber about.
