Hiya i am quite new to this and was wandering how much everyone would expect there mmol/l to go up after a Indian chicken curry( no rice or naan) or an equivalent meal with between 30/40 carbs. I had a miller and carter steak yesterday no chips but ate the onion loaf and never went up after 2 hours.

Thanks all

Indian food can contain a lot of sugar.

I tend to go for a dry meat dish ... like chicken tikka and then a veg curry something like spinach or aubergine to get some sauce... seems to work ok for me spike wise .. i.e. nothing too great.

But if i did have it would my bs reading go up by 2 or 10.

I think that is impossible for any of us to answer. Sorry.
IT depends so much on our personal version of diabetes, and our personal carb tolerances, meds that we are/are not on, and things like that. Even exercise before or after the meal can have a surprising impact. So if you walked to the restaurant, or did some gardening before sitting down to a home cooked curry, you would find your blood glucose reaction was different from if you drove, or sat in front of the tv.

Best option is to eat it once, test before and 2 hours after, and if the resulting blood glucose reading is too high, then have a rethink. Smaller portion next time? Or pick the pieces out and leave some of the sauce? Take a walk after? Add extra veg or ghee, which will slow digestion a bit?

Of course, you might be lucky and discover your bg is great at 2 hours - in which case a larger portion is an option! :D

Indian food is typically high in fat. As a result, the rise in BG may be delayed.
The rise and the delay is a personal thing that you will learn by testing.

Back to the question at hand just so i can get my head around it. You say curry has lots of sugar in it. Am i right in thinking that the sugar in it will make me fat and the carbs in it will or should put my blood sugar up.

Pretty much yes.. the carbs whether sugar or not will make you fatter and raise your blood sugar levels. Sweet tasting curries like korma would probably be the worst ...madras may be ok.. case of eat and test..
