Hello. On Friday we are going for an In dian meal. I am trying to follow a low carb diet. Can anyone suggest the best things to eat? I thought of having a kebab for starter and tandoori chicken for main. Has anybody any other suggestions? Thank you

It all depends on the quality of the restaurant and whether they bulk out expensive ingredients with sugar, fat and starch. I tend to avoid most things with sauces as yu have no idea what's in them. Your choices are typical of the meatier dishes. They may be a little starch in the kebabs, but probably not much.

If they have it, I'd think about a chicken palak, ie with spinach. It's not as dry as just meat and is fine carbwise. Also, good keema dishes or keems with peas.

Sadly, you can't trust the chapatis, nans etc but you might be able get brown rice.

Think also about the lentil and chickpea dishes. Although supposedy carby, they are made up of oligosaccharides and you don't digest them easily. They are broken down by bacteria in your intestine. Your BG levels will remain low but you will have wind. It's not a bad compromise :)

If you avoid the unleavened breads or rice, why not have a meaty main and a main with beans/lentils/chickpeas?

Hi,

I never get the breads, or rice. I might have one poppadom, but I'm wary of the chutneys. Even the yogurt one is usually sweetened. Or desert.

Starters... The kebab style things are fine. And bhajis should be too, so long as they're made with gram flour, not wheat flour. But even then probably only 15-20%.

Mains. I've made some serious mistakes with these. There was the time I thought that 'with cream' would be a good idea. Didn't know that actually meant 'with cream and half a ton of sugar'. Likewise, with any fruit (coconut and pineapple are the usual suspects!). Not sure why they sweeten them so much. A lot of the puréed sludgier sauces seem to be thickened up with potato, parsnip or even sweet potato. Hard to identify, but very spike making!

My best meal ever was the last one. At 2 hours, my BG was only up a smidge:
Starter - Buna prawn on puree (it's a sort of wheat crepe filled with prawns, peppers and tomato. Because of the crepe/puree so I skipped the poppadom).
Main - chicken shashlik (cubed chicken with veg and onion, served on hot plate) with brinjal bhaji (aubergine) and saag paneer (spinach with cheese). No bread or rice.

I like butter chicken too, or tandoori.
Basically the drier the sauce the less it will be sweetened.

A lot of the veg side dishes are bulked up with potato.

I hope you have a great time!

Hi. I'm out for a curry this weekend too! As others have said I avoid breads. Roti I think are much less carbs than nan bread. I usually have a couple of poppadoms, absolutely no chutney but stick to the onion thing they serve. Chicken sag is also a good choice.
I'm type 1 but 0.5 unit usually covers me for all this so it's not very carb loaded.
Enjoy!
