Guys just wondering about time i started carb counting myself i think as been 4 wks and am still mostly in double numbers with blood sugar, so would i been right in saying i would need 7 units of novorapid for breakfast having ( coffee with semi milk and 66g carbs in cereal ) am pretty consistent in what i eat so thinking this should be easy enough to work out.

I was told 1 cp to 10g carbs if that makes sence to you

That's usually the starting point to work out your I:C ratio. If doing 1:10 is leaving you in double figures, you might need to look at adjusting your ratio, perhaps see how you go on 1:8 etc.

You might want to have a look at the Bertie online course on carb counting - http://www.bertieonline.org.uk

Think its the case am not taking enough as i was told to take 4 units with my breakfast but i guess the nurse bases portion size at 40g but i eat twice that 80g which has 66g of carbs so based on that am guessing 4 units is not enough.

Breakfast is my most insulin resistant time and so I need more insulin then and a higher ratio than for other meals. If your 1:10g isn't working, experiment carefully to see what works for you. Make any changes carefully and test lots.

You might also find that bolusing further in advance of eating helps if you're bolusing just before you eat.

I don't really understand what you're talking about here.

Are you carb counting? Carb counting means calculating how many grams of carbohydrate you are taking in and using that information to decide how much insulin to give yourself. I don't really get how that fits with "I was told to take 4 units with breakfast".

Unless youre planning on having your nurse over for every meal it's up to you to decide how much to eat and how much to dose.

If you guys worked out a dose for breakfast using a 1:10 ratio and came up with 4 but now you are eating a double size breakfast, obviously you are eating double the carbs too. So you need to adjust your doseage, the whole point of carb counting is to give you confidence in dose adjustment. The Bertie online course linked in my previous post might also help with that

Are you just trying to work out how many units to take on a 1:10 ratio for something with 66g of carbs? You take the total of the carbs your eating, and divide by 10, that'll tell you how many units to take on 1:10 ratio. It won't tell you if 1:10 is the right ratio for you. 66 /10 = 6.6 or 6.5 units, if you have a half unit pen
