Hi

What time do most people exercise?

When I first got diagnosed, my DSN told me that it was best to start exercising between 30-90 mins after insulin injection/eating...does anybody do any different?

Also, does anyone ever do any exercise without injecting. I heard that its quite good to exercise immediately when you wake up without eating. Does anyone do that, and how does it effect your blood sugar? Does your long acting insulin cover this?

Thanks

Excercise any time you like, when it suits you. whatever you do, you need to test and record how different excercises, at different times affect you.
If I exercise within an hour of exercise I do a reduced bolus injection, if 2 hours after eating and Injecting I need a carby snack. Even if I know I'm exercising 2 hours after eating, cant reduce bolus because I would be too high pre exercise. High intensity cardio, I sip lucozade during.

I exercise any time but take account of my current blood sugar and when my last injection was to see what direction the blood sugar might take. I often have a small piece of fruit just before so that any risk of a hypo is avoided

I try and leave 90 minutes after my last injection before exercising.

It can be easy... You just got to have years of patience and testing and accustoming to summer / winter weather, eating etc..

I been back gardening for almost 2 years on a pump. I dont decide until I see what the weather is when I wake. whether I am going out to work or going to stay in and do papeework... But its learning to adjust and finding out what works.

I stay by my words of a pump is easy.. (However, it takes time and a huge amount of monitoring and thinking and years to perfect)

I have a good understanding of how weather, different activity, time of day, quantities of food etc affect my levels and adjust accordingly pre~ workout depending on current level as to how many extra carbs to eat. Most times, no highs/lows but, sometimes doesn't work how expected or last time even.
I stay by my words, not that easy

It depends on how we see our diabetes Brett whilst exercising... Last week.. Same garden, pretty same starting blood, same workload for four hours etc.. One day after I was 5.5 the next day 6.6... Am I worried?? No, cos although 1.1 diffeence I wasnt high or low. And that is all that matters to me. I dont monitor the **** out of my lufe anymore as I used to. I am quite happy to have any levels between 5 and 8 when gardening. My tbr is invaluable when i need it in winter, but never in summer. I also have two differe nt rates for summer and winter. My basal for when clocks change in spring is 14 units and my winter rates run about 19, almost 20.
My life varies enormously.. Some days full on gardening, some days just doing a lot of paperwork and internet for gp practice and all on the spur of the moment from looking out the window when I wake up...i dont have any routine in my life, sone weeks I'm up at 5am other weeks at 8pm because my hubby works shifts. Sometimes I have children doing arts n rafts lessons at weekends, sometimes I do f**k all... But all of my life now on a pump after almost 4 years is normal 5-8 levels. The only occasions this may vary is when I get hiccups with my pump.

Personally, I now find it easy.

Depends, I try to leave at least two hours after bolus before exercising, preferably more, as I still find that my BG drops like a stone even then.

If I know I'm going to exercise, I'll drop th ebolus a bit, but that runs the risk of going high temporarily.

Take this morning for example, 20km run, reduced basal from 3.5 to 2, reduced bolus from 3 to 1U. Pre breakfast, 6.4, just befor eth erun (1 hour later ) 14.3. 5km later 5.2. Massive drop, and then I had to eat to stay there.

Afterwards, with a carb snack on finishing, went back up to 9.3 for about 90 mins, then back to 7.0 before lunch.

When I'm away with work, I try and run in the morning, before any basal dose as well.

I agree about bolus.. I never have a bolus within 3 hours pre gardening for work. My 1/2 yum yums perk keep my levels even.. As does one weetabix with milk.. However yum yums are delicious...

Injections I could never balance so well as now.

I need 1.5 units of Humalog before my morning cycling commute ~ 9 miles, otherwise I'm too high by the time I get to work. On the way home in the evening , I don't need a shot. Dawn phenomenon at play.
