Just wanted to ask does insulin effect female fertility.i am diabetic type 2,taking novarapid 3 times day and levamir once at night and trying to conceive.
Hello @mehwish arshad Insulin itself does not affect female fertility - however keeping your blood glucose levels in check is a priority, so maintaining a HbA1C below 43 is a useful guide according to NICE. Have you spoken to your diabetic nurse about conceiving ? as it would be a good idea to speak to your team about this.
Thank you Juicyj.yes i have seen my diabetic nurse and she has put me on insulin before I conceive. My HbA1c is currently 40 so she is happy with that.i hope everything goes according to the plan.
Insulin resistance is one of several symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, which does affect fertility.
So while insulin itself may not affect fertility, I suspect that there is a more complicated relationship in the background, where insulin resistance may have an influence on fertility, along with other factors.
Beyond that, I cannot speculate because I just don't know the science!
So in your situation, if you happen to have PCOS alongside your T2, then I suggest that you have another chat with your diabetic nurse.
No insulin doesn't affect fertility. In fact I've had great health benefits being on metformin and insulin through pregnancies.
No large babies and born naturally. Insulin therapy has ensured safe pregnancies when managed correctly. Hypos can be a threat but insulin doesn't restrict cells, in fact it is a growth hormone. Many many happy mums and babies born due to sufficient insulin.
And i hope your nurse mentioned starting on approved brand mineral/vitamin supplements as I gather iodine, for example, is required throughout a pregnancy.
i hope all works out soon !!!
