Does anyone have any experience of endurance sport and advantages/disadvantages of different ways of administering insulin? I’m Looking to see what others experiences are of managing their type 1 using a pump rather than long/fast acting injections while training for an endurance event. Thanks in advance.

Oh ill be watching this post, on MDI at the moment as of last 3weeks but haven't ventured out much yet, I've e run in the gym and 3 or 4 outside witbout a problem, but im normally 35-50 mile a week and race 1/2 and full marathons as well as shorter stuff. Just not sure how to approach it all!

Hello @RunGMD

Exercise and insulin is very much trial and error as we are all different and our bodies respond differently, also coupled with the hormones produced in training as this will also impact on your control, I find running in the morning different to running at night time for this reason as I am more insulin resistant in the morning vs night. Runsweet.com is a useful resource for insulin dependent diabetics, also tagging @Type1Bri who runs marathons.

My personal advice is to keep a diary and monitor your exercise/insulin/bg readings this way, building confidence is key so knowing your bodies response to exercise. I run with a Dexcom G6 which makes life a lot easier and of course carry a plentiful supply of glucose, I have to admit having t1 has fuelled me as I try to defy this condition as much as possible but to me the only issue with running is simply avoiding hypos so on long runs I turn my basal down about 30 mins before and have a carby snack, whereas on a 5km I just ensure I start at above 7 mmol/l and will finish in range.
