Guys I love a good smoke pit and bbq house think, True Reds, Bodeans bbq etc and in those places I usually go for slabs of slow cooked, pulled or BBQ meats with green veggies/salad etc so usually very very minimal carbs.

Question is how does one bolus for this because it sends my levels sky high over 4-5 hours later on the old 30/70 regime I guess allot of protein is being consumed and allot of the rubs/marinades etc probably have sugar/carbs in them right.

How is the protein bolus calculated?

I think it would be a lot easier to deal with if you were on a basal/bolus regime.

Is there any particular reason why you still use the 30/70?

I would say that the rubs and coatings etc would be loaded with sugars. It would be a total guestimate for the carbs and bolus. Is there alcohol involved when you go to these places???

I am on the basal/bolus i switched about a month ago, I'm still figuring things out hence the question.

hi if your carb ratio was say 1 unit of insulin to 10 grams of carb id say if a meal was 80grams of protien you minus the first 30grams the divide by 2 this would leave you 25grams of protien so would be 2.5units of insulin i have read this on another thread so hope its of some use to you x

I always thought carbs and protein were different things?? I have never bolused for protein, only for carbohydrates

So far as my limited understanding goes, protein conversion into glucose via gluconeogenesis only starts happening when a person is eating low enough carb that the body decides there isn't enough carbs readily available for energy. So I take from that you only need to start bolusing for protein if you haven't been eating carbs/low carbing for at least a few meals.

I would agree that the rubs applied to the meat may be containing unknown quantities of carbs that are contributing to raising the OPs levels.

Sometimes u just have to guess....consider all what u r going to consume at a bbq place including alcohol. ...only u will know so only u can decide how much to take.....play around with the units till u r sure u have a good amount of insulin that u r happy with

Remember it also takes the body a lot longer to process protein into BG, then carbs, so there is a risk of a hypo when the insulin kicks in, then a high from the protein once the insulin has worn off. Hence some people split their dose when having a low carb meal with lots of protein.

The "30g" comes from the body first using all the protein that is needed to repair cells etc, before converting what's left to BG. (But the numbers will be different for each person.)

Thanks for this very useful.

So let me get this right from say a meal that has 60g of protein my body may use around 30g of that for repair (I assume if I've had a huge heavy weight gym session this figure may be higher) and the extra 30g could be converted to glucose slowly, hence I could add a couple units to the overall carb counted insulin dose.

Unless the meal is very low carb compared to the protein, it is likely that the insulin taken for the carbs would also cover the protein. (Your insulin/carb dose has been worked out using normal meals, not 100% carb meals and large meals tend to have both more carbs and more protein.)

I think there is a reason that Type1 who are "very low carb" often have a CGM....

i think you would only bolus for protien if you were not eating carbs .i dont bolus for protien if im eating carbs if that makes sense :)

@O_DP_T1 you didn't say in your original post whether the high BG 4-5hrs post meal, when on 30/70 mix, coincided with one of your jabs? That could have a bearing on how to tackle it now you're on a basal/bolus regime.

Unlike before, now you're on this regime you can easily correct the high. Then at the next BBQ meat fest you can tweak it again and again until you get it perfect ;)
