Hi started insulin using a pen 2 weeks ago. Already 3 pens have had insulin crystalise. Is it because they are being kept too cold? Latest was kept in insulated container with cool pads but not frozen pads.

Hi @keithsomerviille and welcome to the forums.

I keep my insulin in the door of my fridge and haven't had any issues. I believe they are supposed to be stored at 2 to 8 degrees C.

I am also wondering whether you have a "bad batch". Are you using prefilled pens or cartridges? What kind of insulin are you having issues with?

Edited to add : and your current pen can be kept out of the fridge at room temperature for 30 days without issue

Thanks, prefilled. I’ve checked online in last hour and it actually says after first use the pen should be kept at room temp but below 30C. I presume by keeping on fridge door or in cool container with 3 cold pouch things that for this insulin, once opened under room temp leads to crystalisation.

I have no idea whether that is the case but if your insulin has crystals I would definitely replace it. I personally prefer reusable pens because you then just keep the cartridges in the fridge till you use them.
