Hi, I'm fairly new to this forum and had a diabetic appointment this morning that I'm not sure what to make of.

The nurse was recommending that I go onto insulin as my current Hbac1 is 71. I'm on Metformin and Forxiga. I'm not keen on going onto Insulin but was wondering if any of you have had a similar recommendation as it's the first time in my 8 years of having Diabete 2 that this has been recommended.

I'm looking to go down a mixture of improved diet, tablets and exercise.

Your nurse is right it would be better for your to get your HBac1 below those figures and going onto insulin would probably do that , but don't worry insulin injections are not that bad and you would reap the health benefits of a lower HBac1 !

For a T2 there are few health benefits to be gained from adding extra insulin to the already high levels present in the body.

That's a very odd suggestion as you are probably already producing way to much insulin yourself so adding more to the mix wouldn't be a great idea.

Have you thought of changing your diet rather than taking yet more medication?

Much though I agree with @jaywak in many ways, you could look at this link first, since the dietary advice is clearly beneficial to many in your position: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html If you don't see an improvement by the next appointment, then insulin could be the best option. Good luck!

Hi. Your nurse is probably thinking that diabetes means lack of insulin in the body hence injecting insulin will add it back. Many medics don't understand that T2 is often the result of insulin resistance. This can be caused by eating too many carbs compared with what is actually needed to provide glucose for the body. There are patients who may be slim and potentially mis-diagnosed early onset T1. It's always worth holding the carbs down to a sensible level perhaps 150/gm or less and there are other tablets. There are tests for T1 which can help the decision to start insulin.

Thanks for the responses. I was on a downer after my appointment as it was so different from my previous diabetic appointments and I was concerned at the Insulin suggestion. It was the first time it has been suggested.
Yes, I'm determined to lower sugar and drop weight which is part of why I'm here.

I completely agree with the carb suggestion. I didn't say above but I'm T2 since the birth of my lovely son who is now 8. I had gestational diabetes.
