Is any one type one and insulin resitant? I'm at my witts end and feel like I'm failing my body I cannot control my sugar no matter how much insulin I put in my body the diabetic nurse told me it's because of my diet but my diet hasn't changed from this time last year where I had perfect control and 5 times less insulin than I am taking now the only difference is I have recently been diagnosed with underactive thyroid but from what I have read it's overactive thyroid that gives you high blood sugars and needing massive amounts of insulin
Will ring doctors in the morning I'm terrified it's going to do awful things to my body already in my left eye I have a blurred spot that flashes and flickers green when I turn the lights out at night
 
Hi @lma89 I too have an underactive thyroid and so take thyroxine to manage it. If i'm not taking enough thyroxine it throws my insulin requirements out completely, I thought I was insulin resistant, but no it was getting the right dose of thyroxine to manage my thyroid which was what I needed to get right. As soon as you can get your dosage right then your insulin requirements will become easier to manage, it can also make you feel quite low mentally, so please take it easy on yourself and make sure you have a blood test booked to check your levels lined up at your docs, the sooner you get this right the easier your type 1 management will get, take care lovely ;)
 
Hi, I was put on a starting dose of 100mcg based on how poor my results where, I found after about 6 weeks my heart rate when the thyroxine was absorbed went up to 139bmp as seen by a doctor and he decided to drop it down to 75mcgs. The blood test I had on my 6week check up suggested 100mcg was not enough but my heart couldn't handle it. I'm currently on 120 basal units and a ratio of 1:1 bolus with extras for the spikes I have, the basal has risen since dropping from 100mcgs which makes sense after what you have just said. Did they treat your insulin resistance or did you just use high doses until your thyroid leveled out? I haven't been told any information related to diabetes and thyroid problems I'm finding it like a full time job trying to research my own diseases
 
Unfortunately I found out the hard way through trial and error, it will take some time to get adjusted to the right level, I take 125mcg of thyroxine, although this is still a bit too high, I prefer to run slightly higher as 100mcg is too low and as the dose only comes in 25 or 100 i've opted to run at a higher dose then 2 days a week I drop it to 100. I wasn't insulin resistant though - it was just getting this dose right, once i'd got the dose right my levels became easier to manage. I did try metformin but didn't make any difference and gave me a very poorly tum..

Type 1 and underactive thyroid and both linked as they are auto-immune illnesses, poor thyroid control will affect insulin requirements, if you can manage your thyroid your control will improve ;)
 
Thankyou that's actually calmed me down I'll book in with a doctor and ask for him to give me a dose based on my last blood test and push for betablockers so I dont feel like I'm going to have a heart attack did you notice any gut problems after starting thyroxine? Lactose was a problem at first I started taking lactase tablets and they work but past few weeks anything I eat causes severe gas, been taking ibs tablets since last night and it has calmed it down completly no cramps no running to the toilet
 
That's ok, you will get the dose right, but it's so important to be taking the right dose as you will start to get better control again.

I have never had a problem with thyroxine, I always take it will food first thing in the morning and take it with water too as that helps absorption, don't take it with iron tablets though. Shouldn't cause any issue with your gut ;)
