Insulin timings with flying

First time flying since being diagnosed as a type 1, so slightly worried. My flight is in the early hours of the morning so I will be waking up at around 2am. Should I still take my long acting insulin when I wake up like I usually do ?

Also any advice about breakfast as I know if I don’t take my fasting acting insulin when I wake up I will spike but not sure if I will be eating much breakfast at that time ?

Long acting insulin should be taken 24 or 12 hours apart so take it at the time you usually do rather than when getting up.
With regards to fast acting, you can take some to handle your Dawn Phenomenon spike and another with breakfast or you could have a small breakfast when you get up whichand a later breakfast.

I have assumed you are carb counting and calculating your dose taking correction into account too.

I would say your best bet would be as close to your normal time.. otherwise if you have it sooner than 24hours you'd need to reduce the first dose then repeat when you return

Even reduced there would be some overlap so still some risk of hypo

Hi @madi1300 What basal insulin are you taking ?

With flying you just need to do lots of testing, there’s other factors to bear in mind such as extra exercise carrying cases, stress hormones then a change in diet and routines which all impact our control, I’ve been hit by hypos once settled into my chair before and about to relax into the flight, so just keep vigilant with your checks.
