Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed Type 1 about 3 weeks ago and have been able to keep my blood sugar stable for the most part except for one or two lows a day. I was on 25 Novomix before breakfast, 10 Novomix before lunch (which is my main meal) and 8 Lantus before supper. Because of the mid-morning and nighttime lows my new doctor stopped the lunchtime insulin and swapped the Lantus with 10 units of Novomix. I now get low in the afternoon and high starting from before lunchtime up until my supper time insuline and sometimes until late at night. I'm also hungry all the time as I'm too scared to eat with high BG

my question: is there any risk in me dividing my total dose of 30 units a day into 3 parts without a doctors approval? My working hours make it hard for me to make a doctors appointement easily.

sorry if I rambled on too long, still very new to all this.

thanks
Sarah

I think you need to be careful making changes without discussion with the GP. I don't want to rock the boat but if you can't get things balanced you might want to discuss considering a Basal/Bolus regime as an alternative to the mixed insulins. The Basal might still be Lantus, but the Bolus (a rapid insulin) makes it easier to carb-count the number of units per meal without affecting the longer-term effect. Discuss the pros and cons with the GP if needed. It's early days for you but be aware there are many insulin options if you can't get balanced.

Agree with Daibell, you would have more control with the basal/bolus regime I think. You're newly diagnosed so I wouldn't start adjusting your insulin without consulting with your medical team. The basal/bolus is simply a long acting, background insulin ( basal ), then each time you eat, you inject for the amount of carbs you eat ( bolus ). It sounds complicated but you soon get the hang of it. For now, keep a BG diary and when you next see your doc/nurse, ask about the possible benefits of switching insulin regime. Good luck, Mo

Thanks a lot everyone, I have a better idea now of what kind of things to ask my doctor next time. In the meantime I'll go on a starvation diet from 4 to 9 pm everyday and put Doc on a guilt trip (kidding)

:) Sarah
