Insulin

Nor me.
Obviously if weight was lost nature diagnosis due to running high that can be regained as insulin now allows proper use of nutrients. But injections making you fat? Nope.

I gained weight mainly on my tummy when I was temporarily on insulin, my doctor confirmed that insulin did this. The weight was lost quickly once I had reverted back to metformin

Over production of insulin causes the body to store sugars/carbs apparently, hence tummy weight gain. I gained weight cus I didn't need insulin to control sugar.

It can do as my endo explained it is a fat storing hormone... he commented it can cause weight gain. I've not gained on it though, but I have gained thanks to other non diabetic drugs.

Proper use and good control plus sensible eating shouldn't increase you weight.

Yes it did for me. My DSN explained it's like a circle, the insulin make you hungry so you need to eat and then have to inject to cover the food and so it goes round. I was taken off insulin because of the weight I gained but I'm sure I will have to go back on it, I will dread that day.

In my case I think simply I didn't need insulin and yes it does store fat if your body has too much insulin - I gained over a stone which came off without any other lifestyle changes, once I was off insulin

It hasn't made any difference to my weight. I read though weight can increase through its usage if you continue to eat the same things, same quantities as pre insulin.

Does insulin make you put on weight?

@luzanmurphy_ You're showing as a Type 2 but I think you've been rediagnosed as Type 1 - is that correct?

Insulin for a Type 1 doesn't make you put on weight.

I've been Type 1 more than 20 years and my BMI has always stayed around 19 or so.

Hi Azure
Yes I was misdiagnosed as type 2. I am type 1.

Thanks for all your replies. I've always been slim. My clothes are just feeling unusually tighter than they normally do and my tummy is a little bit rounder. My eating plan has not changed and I'm still watching the carbs and eating healthily. I thought it must be the insulin x

Hi Azure

Thanks for confirming that :) So no, insulin shouldnt make you put on weight. Type 1s can't make enough insulin for their body's needs, so insulin injections help that and are a lifesaver (literally).

If you're eating a normal diet - that is, not taking in more than your body needs - then you should be ok :)

If you're having lots of hypos which require big amounts of food to treat, then that would affect your weight, but in general the answer to your question is no :)

Concentrate on controlling your blood sugar and your weight should stabilise at a good level for you if you don't eat excessively :)

Luzan, if you wanted to, you could update your profile to show T1. You just have to go to your account (a drop down will appear if you hover over your name in the top, right hand side of the screen. Part way down on Personal Details, you'll find all the various options. It might just help garner the most appropriate responses.

Maybe that's why I've not gained on insulin either... because I hardly produce my own insulin. I'm type 2 though, just my last c-peptide was in the red and my endo said I had no other choice but to be on insulin for life now. Yeh I'd imagine if you're a type 2 still producing your own insulin that would be easier to gain weight on exogenous insulin... makes sense.

Not for me it hasn't. I lost weight intentionally last year and was down to around 75~78kg and was happy. I lost somewhere between 6-8kg before diagnosis quite sharply and that has gone back on. I am back to around 75kg and have been for months now.

I suppose if I increased my carb intake (and thus my insulin) but didn't increase my activity levels that would probably cause an increase in weight over time.

At DX I did gain as soon as I went on it but I absolutely needed to. Then it stopped right where I was before I lost it.

I have stayed the same since however I also tweaked my diet. At DX they told me to eat 20 c per MEAL and that's what's I had been and now eat in a day, not per meal. Anything over 20 carbs per day and I will gain. Once I dropped back to 20 a day I stabilized. Of course my insulin needs were/ are much less. I prefer much less insulin as it leaves less room for error and hypos. But that's just me. I prefer a high fat (80%) diet to carbs (5%) as well. I love fatty gooey food!!!

I agree with @azure. If you're feeding your insulin from hypos then you could gain.
Also as insulin users we can eat more food than we need if we want to and keep bs steady but that won't necessarily keep weight steady. Personally I don't need many calories at all. I have to watch portions and carbs. If I'm gaining I cut the fat a little.
