I am supplied with 5 pens 3ml of lantus which means I can have a shot of 53 units per day and I also get apidra 2 pens 3ml which means I can have a shot of 21 units per day or if it is split 10 and 11 units respectively after each meal in the 28 day calander month
I find the 2 pens of apidra is not nearly enough for my blood control and I should be taking more then 53 units of Lantus because my blood control is out of control
I don't know whether to ask my doctor for an increase in pens for my Apidra and lantus because it is not bringing my bloods down with just the 2 Apidra pens and the 5 lantus pens
with the situation in the NHS at the moment I doubt if they would increase my Insulin pens I think I am lucky I am still receiving the test strips
regards

Hi. Can I ask what your BMI is and whether you are having a low carb diet as these are factors relating to high insulin usage and how to help reduce that.

Hi Simbad. That's nearly 75 units of insulin per day, which is quite a lot.

Personally I'd need to eat about 750g of carbs per day to cover that! Of course if you are very insulin resistant then your situation would be different, but you're almost certain to get a better overall health outcome by cutting carbs rather than increasing insulin.

If you've never looked into low carb (and particularly LCHF) before then it can seem quite daunting at first. In time however many people really get to enjoy the LCHF way of eating. I certainly did. :)

See here for example: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

you're not lucky in receiving test strips on prescription, by law they have to give you them as they've prescribed insulin - you can't have one without the other!

They should also not restrict the amount of insulin they prescribe you in theory if you need it to have good control then you need it - however what the previous posters have said might well help with your general wellbeing as well as your BS control if you are on the 'slightly larger than nature intended' size and eat a 'healthy' portion of carbs............;)

Now I've typed that you'll probably say you're slim athletic, and many years in to a LCHF way of life but suffering from terrible insulin resistance :)

Sounds like you monitor your diabetes carefully and look at the insulin dose to see if it is enough. You could show your record book to the GP, suggest that you would like to increase the dose and ask for more pens. Yes - supply of test strips is a worry, particularly for car drivers. But giving you an adequate supply of strips and insulin so that you can keep well will save the NHS money in the long term, as well as improving your quality of life; catch is the folk who purchase health care and dept of health do not really look at the long term savings of keeping you well, and state pensions run on the premise of short survival once retired. Best wishes.

when I came out of hospital I asked my diabetic nurse am I now Insulin dependent she said yes you are which shocked me I thought it was only type one's which were insulin dependent
I now take my Insulin ridgidly I don't want to have another ketoacidosis,I would not wish that on anyone, someone mentioned my BMI I don't know what it is my height is 5' 7" and weight is 14 stones
