Hi friends Ive been getting high readings after having cereal every morning..I'm sure that's something about of people have for breakfast do in wondering how many units of insulin people take - in on basal/bolus humalog

well, its a proper calculation you should be doing, using an insulin/carb ratio......

usually people will start on a ratio of 1 unit per 10g of carbs, and then go on to adjust that to suit their needs.....

so how many carbs is in your portion of cereal....?

Ive always been taught that but if I do that my sugars will never go low! It's 30g roughly

We are all different so cannot advise on individual doses.

However, due to Dawn Phenomenon/Liver Dump, some people find they experience slight insulin resistance in the morning and need to use a higher ratio with breakfast.

Do you also add a correction dose when your BG is high?
If you start your day high, you may need to correct in addition to eating your breakfast.

Another suggestion would be to do a basal test to check your basal dose it correct.

If you are having the same amount of cereal and the same units of insulin every morning I would try a slight increase on your basal? - 1 unit - then check your bloods

EDITED.... BOLUS not BASAL

@porl69 makes a good point about the basal insulin.......

any meaningful adjustment of your mealtime insulin is dependent on your long acting insulin being correct or as close to as correct as possible...

you need more insulin and that's maybe obvious......getting the right adjustments in place becomes a little bit trickier if you have no adjustment experience....

I've done that so many times. I insulin according to my results also most times. I can never insulin myself without testing

yeah, I think we are all assuming that you have those basic techniques established........

how do you work out how much insulin to give with say a 30g portion of cereal....?

I take different amount sometimes to check but then realise I'm taking too much for a bowl of cereal! How much would you people take?

That's what I was explaining earlier........the amount will be different for everyone.....however a safe place to start for an average adult is 1 unit per 10g, so for a 30g bowl of cereal, that's 3 units......

so you need to actively be using a ratio as this makes it easier to adjust up or down in response to the result you get at lunch time...

Does nobody have cereal??? Because I've asked how much anyone would take for a bowl of cereal and no replies

How much I take for a bowl of cereal will not be the same as you!

Is that 30g carbs or 30g cereal and the milk?

What would you take for the same amount of carbs in another meal? Does the same thing happen reading wise then?

It's when I have cereal this happens and is the cereal and milk not just the cereal.

In that case you need more insulin for this particular cereal. Or less cereal.

Everyone takes different amounts, some may be the same but it's frowned upon to give dose advice...

I don't mind doing it alongside a statement saying proceed with caution etc...

How much insulin did you take for the cereal...?

We can work out the ratio frommthst dose and make suggestions....
