Insulin

Yeah I was on glucaphage which I think was the slow release metformin
I was on insulin for about a year before I stopped it in April so you could say I gave it a try

Hi. A few things. If you are overweight and insulin resistant you MUST reduce your carb intake. Set a limit of, say, 150gm/day for starters. Taking insulin when you are insulin resistant is not ideal as you will already have a lot of insulin in the body that can't be used. Yes, do ask for Metformin SR and after a week or so if any time at all you won't have stomach problems unless you are very unlucky. If after achieving average weight and still needing insulin then ask about the Basal/Bolus regime as another poster suggested. It is far more flexible and will give better control. BTW some people who have excess weight are prescribed Byetta which can help as an alternative to insulin

Foxy, you are talking as if you don't need to immediately treat the high bg with insulin
You are doing yourself great harm with uncontrolled bg and could be looking at dialysis or kidney transplant down the road. Blindness is another problem

Didn't they tell you how important it is. If you take nothing else, take the insulin

when i was diagnose, i give myself a chance by trying the newcastle thing. get done with the newcastle thing and then decide whether you should take insulin or medication. thats the best chance you have given yourself.

i was fortunate that i got access to information when i was diagnose.

I'm on insulin now and can only say it does come with the price of weight gain but I'd rather carry some extra pounds than the ****** health you get with high sugars (mine's were constantly 20mmol/l or higher). It's a personal choice but with all that sugar sticking to your red blood cells will damage your organs long term.

after reading so much here and there , i realise that it is difficult to determine the real type 2. maybe in the near future, the medical world could be more precise.

@Foxy Red there is nothing wrong with being on insulin, it can cause weight gain when you are on the wrong carb to insulin ratio and you are eating more calories then you work off in a daily basis - finding the balance is the tricky part unfortuatnly, but it can be dun it just takes time to figure it out (a lot of trial and error), a dietician should be able to help you figure out a plan that will work for you and help you make adjustments as the months go on so that you are able to maintain or even louse excess weight.

what do you mean "real type 2"? … Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. As a result, glucose (sugar) builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy.

I'm soo sick n tired of diabetes I've been testing my bloods they are always above 20 I've been eating very low carb diet for last few days and it's not made any difference to my sugar levels. I'm not gonna take my insulin as I don't want to put on weight. I know some people don't put on weight but when I took it although I didn't alter what I had to eat I still put on a few stone if it was a few pounds then id take it but I put stones on in a few months no clothes fit me and I got very depressed think id rather live with high sugars and going to toilet every five mins then been fat and depressed all the time

by increasing insulin, the leptin will have difficulty communicating with the brain and therefore the appetite increase. increasing insulin also make it easier for the body to store glucose as very low density cholesterol and glycogen. however it would reduce the glucose in your blood very rapidly.

by discovering leptin, there is a new perspective to this imbalance. as fats provides energy to the body, it do not increase the insulin level. the fatty cells in the body could communicate with the brain to stop the appetite.

now , its difficult to understand which of the 2 comes first.

@Foxy Red I know its hard hun, I hate the weight gain myself, but by having your levels that high for prolonged periods of time you are going to be causing your body damage at a faster rate and the chances are an easily death from it as well. No one wont's that, at least I know I don't nor does my family, I would think your family wont's you around whole and healthy for a long time to come.

Part of the reason for the gain is because your body is starving as it is because it can't use the insulin its got already on board thus the high numbers, once you've been able to equalize your levels to a good safe range you will be able to work with a dietician and form a plan that will help with the weight loss. It might actually mean eating different foods then what your use to, more carbs, less carbs, more protein, less protein, I don't know I'm still in the boat of finding the right balance myself.

But please don't give up hun, you don't need the complications that come with this condition.

I have to say I'm 26st 4lb, I gained about 2 stones after i was prescribed insulin (humalin m3) but through a proper calorie controlled diet i have lost 4st 2lb since january. So your weight can be controlled. If you carry on not taking your insulin and having BG levels of 20 or above, you are going to do your body MORE damage than a couple of extra stones will do. The choice is simple, take the insulin and bring your levels down while eating a proper calorie controlled diet, or let vanity kill you, because thats what its boiling down to. Sorry but sometimes the truth isn't nice.

true, if you wants to lose weight on insulin. determination plays an important part.

Can't give any better advise than has already been said, I too put weight on when I started on insulin, these past few months though have started on a LCHF eating regime of sorts and my BG are very stable and normal, have lost some weight and back to being a happy diabetic, I am also on insuman comb 25 and it works for me, have reduced my Metformin from 2000 a day to 1000, learning everyday, mainly from this forum and the web, a little change to diet works wonders, stop the potatoes, get back on the insulin to get your BG down and try again, much better a little weight gain than a possible early grave imo.
Good luck!!

Hi thanks for your advice
I have given up potatoes and eating coliflower instead I'm gonna give that a try a bit longer before taking insulin again
It's not just the weight gain i was bothered about I also had no energy and didn't want to leave the house at all and I was so depressed I don't want to go back to the dark place I was in

Sugar tonight was 21.2
2 hours after food lowest it's been for quite a while

Fox do you have urine keto strips yet?
Have you read about dka

If you are showing ketones you can get a single treatment to bring them down from A&E without taking insulin full time
No one is going to make you it's your choice if you take insulin full time

I eat healthy I'm not sure just cutting out mash will lower my sugar levels enough. I walk every day for an hour even though it's very painful and that doesn't seem to lower sugars levels either.
What you have been told is healthy is not healthy specially for a diabetic. cut out the mash and other carbs and it may surprise you.
Try it for a few days. You have nothing to lose now that you are not on medication. It worked for me and many others here.
