In your case David with your family history this debate is particularly important.
Our ability to make a decision is muddied. As far as I see the only point of agreement between each side of the argument is that Statins benefit someone who has actually had a heart attack and need to protect against a second.
Much of the debate seems to concentrate on side-effects, which are certainly real in many cases, and not on whether cholesterol is really the bad boy it has been perceived to be for so long.
Like you I find it difficult to take it all in.

I did read a study somewhere that prouced evidence to show that statins do not prolong life expectancy, but they do reduce the chance of stroke or other cardio-vascular event. (That sounds a bit self-contradictory, but that is what it said.)
