@lavie v , share my journey... Oh gosh. Well, I was told I was going to die, basically. My liver was so fatty, they thought it was one big cancerous mass. Then it turned out to be an "abnormal stacking of fat on the liver", which was still supposed to kill me, just not in a matter of weeks. So I turned to Dr. Google and looked up what could cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I could rule out diabetes easily, as our cat was diabetic after pancreatitis, so I borrowed his meter. And got a result of 18. I'd just had lunch and soon after I was spiking to 22. My doc went on holiday, but I got put on metformin before she left.... Which very much didn't agree with me. Got switched to gliclazide by either the locum, nurse or the specialist, I don't recall... Bit of a blur, now. But by then I'd already started reading up on alternative ways to get diabetes sorted, because the metformin really had been horrible for me. After a few shouty books that told me I was going to die (again with the dying!) if I didn't do exactly as I was told in the book, I started in on Dr. Fung's Diabetes Code, and he made sense... I could work with what he proposed. I tested a lot, which proved him right over and over again, got my blood sugars back into the normal range through a low carb diet mixed with intermittent fasting... And I've been there for the past 7 years. Medication-free, as I didn't need the glic after 3 months! I made sorties to carnivore and the like, but keto, so far, has suited me best. I did fall off the wagon at the start of this year, as my mom passed and that really hit hard, and before she went I did a lot of roadside eating going back and forth to the hospice every day, but... Even with what I ate then, I didn't reach my old, sky-high numbers, as my insulin resistance/sensitivity has improved. Alas, I am now 44, my thyroid doesn't do what it should and I gained weight in that period, which I can't seem to shift properly, but it's not as bad as it was, once upon a morbidly obese time (Now I guess I'm just slightly obese, not morbidly so!)... My blood sugars are excellent, and I don't have diabetic complications. So I'll call it a win. Also because I should've been in a coffin maybe 6 years or so ago.
So... I eat little to no carbs, stick with healthy fats, protein... Eggs, meat, poultry, (full fat) dairy, above ground veg, and no grains, corn, rice, spuds and underground veg. That's the extremely short version. If it's something you'd like to try, use a meter. See what meals agree with you or no. A HbA1c every once in a while isn't going to help you sort anything out. Also, if you want to try fasting, there's loads of ways to do it, but I just wing it: I don't usually eat breakfast, and if I get hungry, I'll eat. Which can be around 11 am or 3pm, whatever. Working with a schedule can help, but for me it wasn't very workable. Find what works for you, specifically. Between you and your meter, and a plethora of knowledge either from books or online, you'll come far, I'm sure.
