Hi Everyone

I am Audrey, a married female, aged 68 living in Bedfordshire, England. I am a new member. Just a few answers to the suggested questions are:

I used to have 2 dogs I adored but they are no longer with us now. I don't play sport now but do go to exercise classes. I use to play tennis and squash a long time ago. My favourite Music is still Pop although I enjoy all sorts of music. I make sure I exercise every week about 3 times as I like to think it helps with Diabetes. I was diagnosed as Type 11 about 4 years ago.

I have been camping but in an organised tent or caravan - not one for the minimalist holiday style or put up your own although I like self catering but only in decent properties these days. We go to France quite often and have stayed in gites, a water mill, a mobile home, villas - all great. I have also been to several States in the USA, Canada, Greece, the Caribbean, Italy, Spain. would like to go to Australia and New Sealand.

I don't work now as I retired fully 3 years ago. I worked in banking, the pharmaceuticals industry and later in Further Education.

I am hoping to find lots of information to help me on this site. I was a very good at managing my diabetes when I was first diagnosed and for the first 18 months but do find that I drift and lose motivation these days even though I realise the importance of eating healthily. I am too easily tempted.

I use Apple these days but have been a Microsoft user most of my IT life.

I have three holes in the bottom of each ear, two in my left cartilage, one in my right cartilage and my right tragus, and my belly button. used to have my nose but took it out!
I got my first tattoo on my right foot when I was 17 in Atlantic City. It's a G clef and an F clef in the shape of a heart. I was classically trained on the piano for 15 years. I also have my shoulder/upper arm done. I have a butterfly. My grandmother's favorite opera was Madame Butterfly, and it was the last song we every listened to together before she passed away. It's blue for sapphire because that is both of our birthstone. Her maiden name is Rosenstock, which is why my middle name is Rose, and I have three roses under the butterfly, for my three sisters, Sasha, Eva and Sophia. (I have another sister on the way so I guess I have to get another rose!!) I have a Robin for my mother, Robin Elaine. She is facing backwards because she's always looking after me! On my upper left back, I have the Kraken taking down a pirate ship. My moms brother, Christopher James, passed away a few years ago. He was an alcoholic, but a Captain of a boat, and loved pirates. The octopus symbolizes the addiction and the pirate ship symbolizes my uncle and getting pulled under and fighting for your life. Then on my actual shoulder, tying the two pieces together, I have a sun for my cousin James Ryan who killed himself right before my 21st birthday. There is a dark stormy side on the back with the pirate ship, and bright happy side the front of my arm. This is to depict how he must have been going through a tough, dark time, but there was always a smile on his face and laughter in his eyes. There are more to come, but what I have now is my own designs and they mean so much to me.

- What do you like most about yourself? I always get back up again. It pleases me that I allow myself to be vunerable enough to fall in the first place!
- What do you like least about yourself? I have allowed my past to control far too much of the present and future.

So I stupidly ignored 2 years of warnings that I was pre-diabetic and should take action. 1 month ago I asked the doctor to take my yearly blood test early and according to him it came in at 50 (he didnt say 50 what, but I assumed it wasn't 50 elephants) A second test 2 weeks later came back at 48. In the meantime I had embarked on the start of what I have decided is healthy eating and not a 'diet'. I see a nurse at my GP surgery fornightly to be weighed and have a bit of a moan about the weather and other unrelated topics to fill up the 15 minute appointment because I like the nurse, she is pretty funny. Rubbish at offering useful nutritional advice though beyond 'eat less'. I wont hold this against her as she was a wonderful cheerleader when helping me give up smoking last year. My start weight was just over 20 stone and I have lost 18 pounds in just over 3 weeks, following the logic that carbs are pretty bad for me, (with or without the diabetes issues) and doing a smidge more exercise. I feel brighter and smarter and more focused than I have in years. 2 days ago I saw the diabetic nurse who listened to the changes I've made and put a whole load of booklets she had waiting for me, back in her draw. I assume this means Im on the right track. I have an appointment for what I suppose is a HbA1c blood test on the 21st and I have to pee in a pot (too much info?!?) My blood pressure is 130/90 which apparently is a bit rubbish and I might have to have a tablet for it if it doesnt come down within 2 weeks. I think it was a bit high because she'd just finished showing me that weird thing they test the feeling in your feet with and I genuinely thought th the little sticky out thing was some kind of needle. I was too flipping terrified of the answer to actually ask though.
I've spent the last 48 hrs reading thirstily as much of this forum as I can and I think it may well have stopped me from having some degree of nervous breakdown, for which I am very grateful!
