I'm happy in my skin, I can't change it. The occasional wee risk keeps the heart beating as well...
- What do you like least about yourself?
Don't suffer fools very easily....

Well I hope that puts some meat onto the bones of who I am. Just to add I have three sons in their mid teens, I'm divorced and my last serious relationship ended several months ago. Not that that matters!

On the diabetes front, as I said I was diagnosed about 4 months ago. I was just feeling awful, something wasn't right and when u take as many pain meds as I used to it has to be something to make you aware of it?
So I went to a doctor Id never been to before, my own doctor was on his hols, he ok and about a pint of blood later he told me to come back and see him in a week.
Two days later the phone went and I was asked to come see the diabetes nurse for the glucose fasting test. That confirmed my sugar levels were all over the place. And now im on a long quest of how to deal with it and to stop myself becoming more damaged internally.

I have BG count that ranges between 6 and 14 on any day. It seems to change without much input from me. I've tried control by diet. It works to a point. I seem to average a 7 most mornings after fasting overnight and after meals anything from 6 to 14. I've noticed recently that my levels are higher than they were averaging
four months ago.
I don't eat large meals, I never have. Also I have IBS (not diagnosed, just suffer) and if I eat too much my stomach goes nuts, so small meals are ideal for me dealing with that.
I was told I wasn't to test my sugar levels as being a type 2 I don't need to, basically they said it would cause me more worry than it was worth.

My question was how do I relate how I feel to the levels of sugar in my blood?
I still don't have an answer except from a smart ***** trainee nurse who attended the diabetes training course, she said "we will know you have symptoms if your brought in or you get in touch" , sadly she didn't turn up for another session at the clinic as the few choice words I had for her, it hit a nerve......
me "so I have to be brought in to the hospital in a coma, or worse so you can decide whether I've had a hyper or a hypo?"
Her "well we are in the best position to know what to do if that happened"..
Me "I'd rather it didn't happen you stu....., you want me to collapse or worse before your going to diagnose Whether I'm hypo'ing or hypering? Are you mental??"
Her "mmmmm........"
Then the girl who was leading the course very quickly tried to get us off subject.
My point is, when I was first diagnosed, I tested myself with a wee acucheck meter. I stayed around the 7-9 mark and my blood work from the hospital averaged me at 7. Now 4 months later I'm averaging 7-10 at various times of the day.
I'm due to go for my six monthly check in another couple of months and if my meter is correct I should average out around 8-9. An increase not a decrease. This can't be good?

I know these forums are huge and have a massive amount of information. I will try to read as much as I can as I'm sure many of the questions I have already been answered here. If someone can be bothered, and if it's not posted a page back! I would be interested to know this....

What happens to your pancreas when they stop working to extent they have in a type two? Can the pancreas recover if you stop eating any form of sugar except that in fruit? And finally, I love (and I mean LOVE) 7up and I can't drink it anymore for obvious reasons. Is there an alternative that doesn't taste like it's been brewed in a chemists laboratory? Or Have after tastes or any other of the evil things in it that they use to pass it off to people in our position?.

thank you for taking the time to look me over and I hopefully will see you all as I progress through the forums!

Hi @Keatek - I think that's the longest introduction I've ever read! Lol welcome along! Well done for buying your own meter, it's ridiculous being told not to, in the past I thought I've felt hypo but tested and been 9.2 so a meter definitely helps. I'd start a new thread with a rough idea of what you eat day to day and any questions you've got and people will be along to help.

Abbie - ps, what about 7UP Zero?

Thanks for! It's a bit of an epic intro right enough! You should see my Facebook posts......why say in three words when twenty will do fine!
I've tried the 7up Zero and it's very 'sacchariny', it's not good. It's almost as though you can taste the lack of sugar and the chemicals they try to sweeten it up with....there's something out there that tastes good but I've yet to find it!
I will start that thread! D/

Hiya...I'm Paul....
I live in the UK....
I have been recently diagnosed with type 2 ..it's all a bit new and fresh! They're treating me with Metformin tablets.
I weighed in at 14st and I have been this weight for years.....I don't know how long I've had it, it was a coincidence I got tested by my bosses wife as a bit of fun....

HI Paul, I was diagnosed 6 years ago, I was on Metformin for 6 months, and as I responded quickly to changing diet and following it like a new religion, I have been medication free for 5.5 years. I am in the States, so our measurement of BS is different than the UK. I am here if you need any support or please feel free to pick my brain on diet etc, it is working for me, and my A1C was very high. NIce to meet you~!

Hi & welcome to you all, @Grace @Nsot @Dreamdoctor @Keatek @meetangel your have all certainly come to the right place for help & support.

I can only imagine that so far to-date you have not had the usual long list of info that @daisy1 gives to all new members. She should be along soon with her list.

Neil

@Grace @Nsot @Dreamdoctor @Keatek @meetangel

Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it helpful. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 140,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.
