Hi all. My name is Yvonne and I have been watching this forum for a while although have never got round to posting before. I was diagnosed in 2007 with a reading of 30 (don't know what that is in %). Nurse didn't know how I was still standing. Caused by stress - 15 years of parents taking it in turns to have cancer and holding down a full time teaching job at same time. After losing both parents within months my system imploded. Took docs 2 years to decide which type of diabetic I was because it came on so quickly. Have been on insulin, diet only and tablets. Finally decided I was T2. Was on metformin and gliclazide. Last year was taken off gliclazide. Only take 500mg metformin twice a day now but have only had HbA1C done once a year in June or July. Took early retirement in 2012 after stress at work meant sugars were out of control and BP was sky high. Everything now under control, BP normal. This thread will hopefully let us to get to know one another better and allow us to see which users we might share similarities with. Perhaps you would like to tell us more about your diet and exercise regimes? You might be able to improve your A1c results just by tweaking them, if you want to. I think everybody here would agree that to lower bg, diet is more important than Metformin, and many would say exercise is too. I have the impression that we are divided into four views on Metformin. (1) People who think Metformin is helpful and take it. (2) People who have been told to take Metformin by their doctors but don't want to or refuse to. (3) People who would like to take Metformin but can't persuade their doctors to prescribe it. (4) People who have been inspired to greater efforts to lower their bg because they REALLY don't want to take Metformin. I was in category (3) until recently but am now delighted to have persuaded my GP to prescribe Metformin for me.Hello: I have been enrolled on this forum for some time now, but have not properly introduced myself.
My name is Gwendolyn, I am a healthy 79 year old Eurasian widow. I have three adult children, one
girl and two boys. My favorite activities are reading, listening to music, and dancing. I live in Trinidad,
West Indies. I have visited Canada, New York, Miami, Guyana and St. Lucia. Where my health is
concerned, I like to take preventative steps, rather than wait for something to happen. So, five years ago
I had a GTT done. This indicated that I was pre-diabetic. So, I started a diet and exercise program, with
AIC results of: in 2014- 6.1%, 2015- 6.2%, 2016- 6.3%, 2017- 5.5%. Normal for this lab is 4.5%-6.3%.
I prefer not to take medication, unless it is strictly necessary, so as not to end up with the whole pharmacy
in my medicine cabinet. So far, so good. But still wonder whether I will regret not taking Metformin as
one doctor suggested....
Sorry you have been and are going through so much. I can't write much now, but I think @donnellysdogs is a cancer survivor and might be able to help you. (Apologies to donnellysdogs if I got this wrong! ) I have lots of fellow feeling for you, as I used to be a teacher, and I have to say, early retirement was the best thing that ever happened to me! There seem to be quite a few new members posting all at once just now. If you don't get enough replies, don't hesitate to ask questions on other sections eg you could scroll right down to "Other Health Conditions and Diabetes" and post there. My problem is that a couple of days ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer so now have something else to stress over.
My name is Keith. I'm a young 74 years of age, retired and an ex Londoner living this past 40 years on the Isle of Wight with my wife. We have one daughter and two granddaughters - one 18 and the other 14. I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2006. This year was a turning point for me in the diabetes saga when I received a letter telling me I had mild maculopathy. As you can see by my avatar I am a enthusiast photographer and the thought of losing my eyesight was more frightening than having diabetes. Anyway, it made me take this disease more seriously than I had been doing. For me carbohydrates were my biggest problem: potatoes in all their forms and rice spike me so much that I have now cut them from my regular diet. I eat home made bread a couple of times a week but usually for lunch and no carbs after 5pm. This works for me, keeping my BG levels on the straight and Narrow. I test twice a day and have done since the maculopathy letter. My goal is to turn that part around. Onward and upwards as they say.

Metformin is considered a very safe drug as it has been in use since the 1950s. It is claimed to have heart protective benefits and may also protect against cancer. In the UK NICE now advises GPs to prescribe it to pre-diabetics, after they have tried diet and exercise, in order to stop them from progressing to full diabetes. You might enjoy this article by David Mendosa, who was a much appreciated member of this Forum until his recent death (not from diabetes!)
