Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

I’m Melissa, I’ve been type 1 diabetic for 40 years now, and up until now I’ve never really had contact with any other diabetics, unless seeing people at diabetic clinics. Thought it about time that I reach out and say ‘hello’, think I’ve spent too long getting on and managing by myself. Apologies for not following the intro questions, I’m not so tech savvy either, you may tell that as it’s taken me 40 years to reach out to a forum
I’ve been a member a while, just reading posts when I’ve needed perspective or to see how others manage. I’m a mum to one, Self employed, keen organic gardener, love all music, have a cat, like cycling and walking, dancing.
Authenticity is my best trait, bluntness (which I blame on diabetes ) my worst. Good to reach out at last, it’s been a long time coming

Just told week ago that I have diabetes type 2...my lifestyle and diet I was living not surprised but still a hard thing to hear.
Instant shock into stopping all sugars. All I seem to be doing is researching and trying to learn how to read food labels.
2 big questions I have at the moment is
For a diabetic the carbohydrates is the information that you need of a label?
Is there a max on carbohydrates a day or a recommended amount?
My name is Frank and I have no doubt I am going to have a million questions for ye all. For now I am 43 male from Ireland lover of live sport music and fishing. Favourite bands iron maiden and machine head so I guess you can call me a rocker at heart. I suffered from depression and eating unhealthy was a crutch to deal with it.
I suppose the one question other people I guess ask when first diagnosed is what nice things you can eat....I will settle for is there a ice lollies out there that could enjoy on a hot day.

I started a job in January, however this is all a rough subject haha.

I studied a levels in psychology and sociology. Also a btec in health and social care.

Always want to build on my personal growth and be the best person I can

I worry too much about what others think. Lack a lot of confidence and self esteem. Which I am working on.

I teach animal care and am a manager to an animal unit. I also rehome and look after cats for a charity.

I have recently joined here as I have grown up and spent 23 years never knowing who I can talk to and understand living with diabetes.
Kind of got fed up with people telling me they get me, as their nan has it!

Was diet controlled for first few years then put on metformin I have lost weight and now ideal weight at 119 lbs but still not ideal

Sounds like your having a bad time of it. Have you tried intermittent fasting ? I would recommend it also have you heard or read any books by him

My name is James. I’m 42 from Ottery St Mary, I have a brilliant wife, and a 6 year old energetic daughter. This is hard for me to write as I’ve had a long hard time of it for the past 6 years.

We don’t know whether I have diabetes. Around the time my daughter was born, we had a series of bad issues. My best friend attempted suicide in our shared flat (I had taken 2 weeks off as he was manically depressed). The day I went back to work he attempted that, and his mother blamed me for not being there. My gran died. My wife’s stepdad died. I lost my job. I injured back and arm powerlifting. They found an issue with my heart, some genetic issue my dad had.
Since then I haven’t worked and I’ve been a stay at home dad. I stopped exercising and put on weight. I had no energy and felt terrible, so they decided I have depression (now it’s been reassessed to PTSD from childhood trauma) and after many tests they said I have fibromyalgia. I had a series of doctors tell me if it wasn’t for the diabetes tests, they would definitely think it was diabetes. All my symptoms are that of diabetes- my grandfather had it terribly. I’ve done as most ‘fibromyalgia’ people do and try a billion different things to have more energy and less pain.
I don’t know what possessed me, but the ‘diabetes’ non-diagnosis has always nagged me. I’ve seen so much research with diabetes being linked to fibromyalgia. I obtained a small amount of insulin and I used a very small amount. Less than quarter of the suggested starting amount. I experienced a day where I had no burning sensation on my hands and feet, I didn’t need to lie down in front of the fan. I can feel my skin and I can feel cold items again. I could see properly and I had the energy to go in the garden. Food tasted wonderful, my mind was clear.

I know I did the wrong thing. I know I can’t say this to a doctor. But does anybody have a name for what I have? My blood readings say I don’t have diabetes but they are surprised I don’t have it and obviously it cannot be treated as diabetes unless it ticks the right box. Could anybody help me?

Neither, ideally, though I'm typing this on a Surface Pro 4. Apple grinds my gears for a number of reasons, but this isn't the time or the place.

None. I'm back into cycling, but nowhere near at any kind of competitive level.

- Do you get angry easily?
I don't think so. It's rare that I even get stressed.

A ball closure ring guiche piercing (Google it.) The outline of a jeans pocket on my right buttock.

It's a familiarity thing for me. So I like a variety of 80s through to early 00s stuff, plus more modern things I can dance to on a night out.

I have a caravan, though haven't used it for a while. My last tent camping trip had me swearing never again.

My name is really distinctive, I may be the only person with it in UK, so I'll go by my nickname, Tay. Age is just a number. . Type two diagnosed 2007. I was doing very well on low carb then the referendum happened. I was a full-time Remain campaigner and so focused on that for last four years that I lapsed somewhat. Not completely, but not keto. I didn't put on enough weight to be in the danger zone on the weight-height chart and didn't need to buy bigger clothes, but they are tighter than I'd like, on my stomach.

During lockdown, I resurrected an old website, cleared it out and started working on it. I won't give website URL in case it's against the rules.

I'm a college-trained former chef, with a certificate in nutrition and I've been doing ADHB certificates online during lockdown.

My practice nurse took away my strips so I haven't tested in years. However, I do know which foods spike me eg parsnips and I'm also able to feel when my sugar is higher. I'm thinking of getting a combined blood glucose and ketone monitor, to use occasionally.

GP said that I could ditch the Sitagliptin as I low carb at last review. He closed his practice week before lockdown. New practice just carried on with same prescription for 4 daily Metformin SR.

My husband has NCGS so gluten-free. He bakes but I don't. I prefer not to eat a tonne of sweeteners. My body takes no notice of the theory and sees all sweeteners as sugar. Even 99% cocoa chocolate tastes sweet to me. My taste buds have really improved, eating natural food. My retinopathy improved, my neuropathy improved and when I first went low carb, I dropped from size 22 to size 12/14. We have been eating mostly organic and wild since 2012/13 and barely eat processed food.
