Is diabetes causing erectile dysfunction?

I think you should need to get yourself another, more sympathetic GP, or a referral to a Specialist in ED. There is no reason why you cannot have a full and happy sex life as a Diabetic. Age is no barrier either !

yeah i dont think i can face going through it all again with the doctor the thing is i went to a male doctor and to be honest felt him very patronising, he kept talking down to me and as a student nurse that really annoyed me it was like he was having to justify and clarify everything he was saying . i have an appointment with my own (female) gp in a few weeks so ill discuss it with her and see what happens then just a bit of a kick when your already down but thanks Ken

Viagra, Cialis & Levitra can be prescribed on the NHS if the patient has any of the following:

diabetes
kidney failure requiring dialysis
kidney transplant
multiple sclerosis
Parkinson’s disease
polio
prostate cancer
removal of the prostate gland (prostatectomy, including men who have had a transurethral resection of the prostate)
radical pelvic surgery
severe pelvic injury
single-gene neurological conditions
spinal cord injury
spina bifida.

I have spinal cord injury due to a disc prolapse caused by a congenital deformity of my L5 lumbar bone & have been on "free" NHS medication for ED for about 10 years (long before I was diagnosed as diabetic). I was first prescribed Viagra, but found it to be a bit inconvenient (it has to be taken about an hour before an erection is required & its effect lasts only about 2 hours). Viagra also gave me severe headaches.

I asked to try Cialis & find that it is more effective & more convenient. Though it is still best to take it about 1 hour before an erection is desired, the effects of the Cialis last much longer. In my case, the Cialis takes about 48 hours for its effects to wear off. The headaches are much less severe too.

It is important that people understand that the above mentioned medications DO NOT trigger an erection in themselves; mental & (possibly) physical stimulation are also required. Fortunately that means that I am not stuck with an erection for 48 hours after taking Cialis! :lol:

Just tell your doctor that its not working very well and that you think you may need a stronger dose. Hopefully they will put you on a double dose, from which you take half a tablet at a time.
 
My GP told me that as a Diabetic I am entiteled to 4 a month which means that they have to prescribe it and can not refuse it. If your Doctor refuses just tell him that you are going to inquire about your rights and if necessary complain to his superior/manager, that should do the trick.

There is no hard and fast rule that says that you must be prescribed any drug. If it is thought medically appropriate then that is all the criteria to get a drug on the NHS. If they don't think you need it, then you will simply not be prescribed it no matter who you complain to. As for 4 only.....that needs to be negotiated, not demanded.

I've been diabetic for 33 years now and suffering from most of the complications, including ED. I blamed the wife at first (that "went down" well too!). My specialist had asked me regularly if I had been suffering from this but I had not. It sort of just happened overnight really. My GP started me on Viagra but, over the course of time the effect was less and less. Eventually he sent me to the urology dept where various options were offered to me. I'm now using Alprostadil (Caverject) injections. They work although the effect does seem to vary sometimes, between an hour or so and up to most of the day!!
I note that nobody has mentioned this form of treatment in the previous posts and it obviously is not going to be favoured by many, but it has made a huge difference for us (no pun intended) and it isn't as bad to administer as you might think...honest.

Hi, I have posted on this subject before, I like you have been through all the hoops and jumps with the Urology Clinic and hypnotherapists and all sorts of other 'ists' too. Caverject is great providing you get the dose correct, but there is a limit to the dosage and the amount of times it can be used in a week. It can sting a little which may put some off, but the end result is worth it. An understanding partner helps a lot especially if she is willing to do the deed (injection) and the required massage afterwards. The injection can be prepared (mixing) beforehand (up to 24 hours I think), so this saves a lot of messing around when you decide to have sex (a big turn-off for some). I would reccomend it if all else fails, but I would NOT use the other solution MUSE (urethral insertion) which has lots of issues associated with it. Caverject must be administered by a doctor or nurse the first time so that you understand how to use it and so that they can monitor its effect and advise the dosage. My first experience left me in a state of mild embarrasment when walking out of the hospital after the injection, but I will leave that to your imagination; So wear baggy trousers or a long coat :oops: :roll: :shock: . I hope this helps... do try Caverject, as can also help you overcome any psychological issues with erection by bringing back confidence again.... it did it for me.

Bloods perfect. Age 74 years young with ED, tried Tadalafil (Cialis), Sildenafil (Viagra) and Prostaglandin urethralapplication (Muse). No such luck, so I have been refered to a specialist for a Penus inplant (I've requested that If I'm given this op that it be on the NHS. I'll keep you informed as to what happens.

Hmmmm! I have heard about this approach, so it would be interesting to hear first hand about the outcome(s).
I have a question also about Caverject injections. who else is on these and what is their dosage (Mr burden?) I am about to up my dose to 15 but I think (not sure) the highest is 20. I am not having much success lately with pills and vacuum pump and this is causing me some stress, fortunately my partener is very patient.
I am told by my peers and my Consultant that my issue is predominantly psychological and that the mechanics are all functioning as per normal...i.e. but blocked by the brain. So in addition to increasing the Caverject dose I am also about to try some more hypnotherapy (not successful in the past but was not needed/important so much then). Here is some information from my Consultant which explains a lot; did you know that the main problem for us ED sufferers is that the brain is overdoing its proper function? Yes it is the brain's function to supress erection not encourage it as you might assume!!!
So if anyone has any thoughts on or experiences with these areas I am sure I and many on this Forum would welcome them. It is also good to see that we are being open about this issue.

I started on 2.5ml about 18 months ago, but now I usually need 7.5. Sometimes, though, that is too much and I have to "keep myself to myself" for most of the day!! :lol:
I don't know really what affects the dosage results, athough if my blood sugar is low (4-5) the Caverject does not seem to be as effective. My pre-loaded dual chambers (where the powder and liquid are in separate parts until needed) only go up to 10ml but I'm sure that larger doses are available. I've also seen kits that I believe you draw up yourself.
Regarding stress, I think that it is a bit of a circle, when it fails - you worry - which causes stress - which makes it fail...and so on. I've (we've) been through the same anxiety. So, if it's any help, my advice is to forget about "trying", abstain for a while. Eventually you and your partner will be thinking more about "getting it on" than the fact that it might not perform.
 
I have been through the onset of ED but since I was put on metaformin it seems to have got much worse. I havent seen any reference to lowering of 'libido' in side-effects of Metaformin - anyone know if the drug has this side-effect ?
 
According to my understanding there is an entitlement for erectile dysfunction if you are diabetic. I discussed it with my nurse and then with my GP. Different areas different rules perhaps, but certainly I have Cialis, and I also find it helps to make urination easier too since with my diabetes or age there is shrinkage. It has been a boon to me and improved my quality of life. There are slight stomach upsets after taking it but it is only a minor inconvenience and the benefits are good

Diabetes is typically a cause for Erectile Dysfunction. However, it's not 100% that you will fail in bed if you are diabetic. If you face any problems, i would recommend

I get Viridal on prescription, 4 shots a month (1 a week). It has a very very fine needle and is virtually painless to inject. It's extremely impressive and you get a 'diamond-cutter' erection that lasts around an hour (even if you pop to soon LOL), then after-shock erections lasting around 15 minutes for 4-5 hours after.

My only regret is I wasted nearly a decade taking viagra and suffering the side effects.
