Is honeymoon period coming to an end or is it because I am unwell

Have been diagnosed for nearly 6 months, until recently I have tended to be on 1 unit bolus in morning, 1 at lunch and 2/3 on the evening (depending on levels) I am on 1 basal but was of that completely for a time period but requested to go back on as I was up and down like a yoyo!

Since Sunday lunchtime I have not had 1 reading between 4 and 7. Yesterday I was between 7.3 and 9.4, and this morning I was 10.2. Could this be my honeymoon period ending? I took 2 units yesterday lunch rather than 1, and 3 last night, plus 2 this morning to try and get it down but I still seem high.
I have not been very well since Sunday morning, have had sore throat, aching back, and could not sleep on Sunday night-my ketones have been 0.0-0.2 on my blood monitor, the mad thing is that I had 4 hypos between 00:30 Saturday and 08:00 on Sunday morning having just had my normal amount of insulin, so I don't know if it is the end of my honeymoon or if because I am not well it is effecting my insulin resistence. any advice would be appreciated

Hi! If you're not well it's probably the illness affecting your levels. Make sure you keep monitoring and alter your insulin accordingly.

Do you carb count?

Not particuarly, If I am having a meal with more carbs in it then I will take more insulin, but my weekly meals are very similar in terms of carbohydrate, I always have the same breakfast and similar lunch, I have had these normal things last couple of days and still increased the insulin but with no good.

My diabetes nurses told me 1 unit of insulin to every 10g carbohydrate, I did this and had hypos constantly, I am more like a 1 unit to 25g or was atleast!

I use half a unit per 7g for a lot of meals.

I would suggest you start to carb count properly. Without that you can't be sure what the reason is behind the rising BG

I agree with Hale. If you're "guessing" your intake of carbs, you will struggle to get tight control, although you're illness will not be helping. I appreciate your meals may be similar in carb content but 10g either way can have a big impact on someone like yourself who is very insulin sensitive and possibly still in the honeymoon phase. Hopefully you'll settle down once you feel better but still may not be a bad idea to measure your carbs more accurately and maybe keep a diary. Good luck !

if your unwell then the higher bg readings will more than likely be down to this.

As you have been diagnosed 6 months now ask your DSN to put your name down for the next available DAFNE course, this is course for type 1's to teach them how to carb count and match their insulin (amongst other things to do with managing diabetes on a daily basis).

Hope you feel better soon :)

I hope u are fully well again. Just a note - in 35 years of Type one i have noticed a common pattern before my worst bouts of illness: sudden untypical hypos before i know i have an illness, or when i feel just a bit off colour. When i am ill, of course, i need more insulin. It is very interesting to see your experience, especially as you may still be in the honeymoon period.
