Hello all, Since i have come accross this excellent website i have gathered loads of usefull hints and info, one of which was to register for online access to my medical records which i done at the start of this year so was able to add info to my profile such as HbA1c results etc. I was diagnosed type 2 in December and when looking through my records when i registered i noticed the diabetic nurse had put on my notes i was to be recalled for 'Diabetes Interim' 20th March 2019, at the beggining of March i started on X-PERT structured education programme for people with type 2 Diabetes (strongly recomend any newly diagnosed if offered the course take it) six week course so thought as i hadn't heard from Health center i would wat till the course finished so i wouldn't have to miss a session should i be offered an appointment on a Tuesday. The day after i completed the course (late April) i rang the surgery as i still hadn't heard, the receptionist informed me that there was a 'conflict' on her screen and that she would e-mail the nurse to enquire, later that day i received a call from the receptionist saying i needed a 25 minute appointment with the health care assistant and also i needed a blood test before then (expected the blood test) arranged to go in for blood test for two days later and an appointment with health care assistant for the end of the next week. When i thought about it later i was a bit confused as to the need for the health care assistant thinking surely she wouldn't be as knowledgeable of diabetes as the nurse but put it down to maybe being the way they done it and thought no more of it.

The next afternoon i received a text message from the surgery asking me to contact them and my immediate thought was they would tell me that i would have to go to the Hospital for the blood test as they wouldn't be able to do it at surgery, trying unsuccessfully all afternoon to contact them (reception is busy and your call is important to us blah blah blah......you are caller number 22) eventually i gave up and thought i will go in for my blood test in the morning and if im right about having to go to Hospital i have to pass the surgery on way anyway so wasnt an inconvienience. I was wrong, they were trying to contact me to tell me they had made a mistake, i should see the diabetic nurse and not the health care assistant as it was only a ten minute interim appointment needed. They cancelled the health care appointment but then said there was a waiting list for the nurse and they would contact me when an appointment became available. Two days later another text from surgery please contact us i rang and got through to be told i was due an annual diabetis appointment and needed to arrange a blood test and a 20 minute appointment with the health care assistant followed by a 10 minute appointment with the diabetic nurse! i explained it couldnt possibly be an annual check as i was only diagnosed four months previously and i was waiting on an interim appointment which was now one month overdue! oh well you will have to wait for the nurse, i know i'm on the waiting list.

Fast forward two weeks and i still havent heard so decided that when i dropped in my blood pressure repeat prescription that morning i would speak to reception and find out what was going on, again i was told i was on the waiting list they had been busy and they would ring me when an appointment was available, oh i see ok and off i went. And so here we are today, two months after i should have had an interim appointment, and just about a month after having HbA1c blood test, this morning i take in repeat prescription for Statins and decide to enquire at reception as to what is happening about appointment, yipee im top of the waiting list.......theres no appointments available at present but you're top of the list! ok but why has it taken me approx six weeks to get to the top of the list surely that isn't normal having to wait this long to see a nurse? oh well the diabetic nurse has left......so you're telling me you don't have a diabetic nurse? well.......we do but we have to borrow from other surgeries as and when we can, so i could be waiting forever then no you're top of the list......just said thanks and left, i wasn't rude to anyone and i didn't raise my voice, but i'm starting to be a little fed up! am i being unreasonable?
Sorry to waffle, Chris.

Not unreasonable at all. Shabby is what I would call that service, however, think yourself lucky that (eventually) you will see a DSN. In the two years since diagnosis I have yet to see see a Diabetes Specialist Nurse.

Hello Chris, I can understand your frustration as well. In general the NHS does have a long waiting list for appointments to see certain specialists. I too, waited over 8 weeks to get an appointment to see a DSN at the hospital - 14th June. Just be patient and manage your health to the best of your ability.

Unfortunately, as a T2, you’ll do well to prepare yourself for suboptimal care. I haven’t even been asked in for a HbA1c test several months after coming off my meds. Good job I know what I’m doing, because they don’t.

Honestly you’ll probably get much better advice here than any DSN will ever offer. I do feel your frustration though. Good luck!

I usually find that I turn up to an appointment - and it can be at any surgery as there are 5 amalgamated in the area, and find that it is about cholesterol.
I have a defunct thyroid and type two diabetes, but that never gets a mention unless I bring it up, and I am told - that's fine.

Sounds like my GP practice. Try writing a complaint letter to the Practice Manager - it worked for me.

Thanks Jim, You're not wrong i have learnt far more here than i have from the people paid to inform me, and also get more answers to questions quicker here into the bargain! but to be fair to my GP i dont feel i'm singled out for suboptimal care anymore since being a T2 than i was before!

crazy and anoying to have to cope with so difuse talking of apointments...

but luckily you can learn to control your diabetes on your own and get blood glucose down in normal range by going low carb eating style... actually I think there was an all over Europe intension to have type 2 diabetics in for consultation every 3 month, but when you learn to cope and keep your numbers down you´ll find you only need them for having the HbA1c to asure you that what you do is totally the right way to control diabtes type 2....

Thought about that Chook but if i did, wouldn't be surprised if i was told i could always look elsewhere, and as registering with a GP seems to work on what Parish you come under in this area may not be adviseable.

Hi Chris noone could say thats acceptable service, people could easily fall through that big wide crack. I hope when you got your HBA1c test result you were happy with it.The golden rule is take control of your own health and dont rely on anyone else, medical or otherwise.

Thanks Freema, i just thought it would be more beneficial to me (ok i'm selfish, i can live with that lol) as recenty diagnosed to have the interim check, especially as they tend to advise diet control to start with, just to reasurre patients that what they are trying is doing well/good/ok/bad.

Hi PenguinMum, HBA1c on diagnosis in December was 62mmol and in may had gone down to 43mmol so was reasonably happy with it, think i'm going in the right direction.

Thats really great Chris. I just knew by your post that you were going to want to get things done. Next time it will be even better! Managing diabetis not always easy and there will be challenges but once you decide to be careful the rewards to your health will be clear. All best wishes.

I always make my appointments on-line as you can see at a glance when there are slots available. I have also found that when there is a long waiting list it is worth looking again in a few days, as they hold some time slots back in case someone needs an appointment urgently.

Though not all of the online systems allow you to book the appointments you actually want.
For example the site my surgery uses allows you to book bog-standard doctors appointments, but that does not include the DN or any appointment for any type of nurse appointment, doesn't allow you to book telephone appointments either, and some other stuff I can't remember without checking.

Thanks again PenguinMum, obviously right away on diagnosis sugar was off the shopping list, i used to enjoy hot sweet tea and would drink it by the bucket load, still cant face it without sugar so its replaced by coffee with creme but probably no more than four cups a day, no more spuds other than one or two roasties on a sunday, i looked upon it as a warning to make changes so thats what im trying to do, little by little......but i will get there!

Hi Mr_Pot haven't tried making online appointment probably sounds silly but not sure i trust it, feel better talking to someone then i know for sure its been actioned, i just thought it wouldn't be as long waiting for Nurse as it would for GP.

Yesterday I attempted that no appointment available.

So I went into the surgery and asked the receptionist can I make an appointment to see a doctor her reply no you cant there are non available for the foreseeable future oh when till 2020? something like that she said.

So I remarked it's true what they are saying about the almost impossibility of getting a doctors appointment her reply yest there are just not enough doctors.

I could she did say ask for an emergency appointment but may have to wait several hours and hopefully would be seen by a doctor at some point or phone at 8 in the morning but there would be no guarantee of actually getting an appointment if I did.

I did remark at that point that I wish I had done a medical degree instead of the computer and podiatry degrees then at least I could treat myself. and then left.

My view was exactly the opposite. When I book on line I can see the appointment is registered and correct, over the phone I don't know what the receptionist has entered. But the main reason I prefer on-line is because of the silly dialogue with the receptionist which goes something like... "I would like an appointment with Dr X first thing in the morning" "How about Thursday at 9?" " I can't do this Thursday", "How about the following Tuesday at 3pm" "No, it needs to be in the morning" and so on. On-line I just look at all the slots available and choose the best one.
