Hi,

I recently collected my prescription from Boots my local chemist. I have been told by the pharmacist that they are no longer making does anyone know if this is correct?

Never heard anything and I am sure it would have been mentioned in Balance if it were. I only picked up my prescription for lantus 2 weeks ago and the Pharmacist said nothing.

I had heard talk of Sanofi discontinuing some of its Lantus pens (including Optiset and Opticlik) by the end of 2011.

Sanofi has also stated that they're expecting supply shortages for Lantus Solostar until April (2012), due to the demand from those switching over from the discontinued pens.

There is no info anywhere to state that Lantus is being withdrawn.
If an insulin is being withdrawn then 6 months or a years notice has to be given to say this is going to happen. For obvious reason it can not just be stopped. Just think of the loss of income to the pharma company esp without a replacement at the ready. Secondly and pardon the sarcasim the patient has to be considered.

I only found out today that it has been withdrawn after collecting my prescription with no Lantus in it because they no longer make it. I have about half a pen left and use 46 units a day. After seeing the DSN and dr on the 13th of Feb, I had not been told this about Lantus.

Are you sure its Lantus in vials and cartridges that is no longer going to be available or is it the pre filled pen?

If it's the pre-filled pen then that will be because the wholesale supplier to Boots cannot get hold of it. if Boots could use a different wholesaler then you might be able to get it. Go into another pharmacy and ask if they can get it.

I think there are crossed wires some where. Lantus has not been withdrawn at all. Give the patient help line a ring

Best also to make sure you always have spare cartridges of insulin as well. Very dangerous to go so low what happens if you drop and damage that last cartridge?

It wouldn't surprise me! The same company made apidra but they withdrew that a while ago. Now looks like i'm gonna be getting a new long acting aswell as new fast acting!

I agree with Carbsrok, I think that someone has misinterpreted the withdrawal of the optiset disposable pens and opticlik cartridges. Lantus is still available in the Solostar pen and Clikstar cartridges.

Nor has Apidra been withdraw. There was a big fire on the Apidra pen production line which meant they were unavailable for some months. They have started production again. (Opticlik cartridges and optiset pens have similarly been replaced by clickstar cartridges and solostar pens

Oh now I'm annoyed (not at anyone here) But my doctor told me there was a manufactoring problem with apidra and I wont be getting it anymore. It was my first insulin (admitedly only for 2 years) and I don't like this novorapid stuff they put me on! Gonna speak to my doctor see if I can get the apidra back :)
