is low carb safe during pregnancy?

Just as an afterword to this - I've just been checking through Atkins New Diet Revolution, and he says in there that on no account should any pregnant woman go on to his extreme low-carb diet - that is, the Induction or On-going Weightloss phases. In practice it would work out at him saying - no less than around 100g carb per day at the very minimum.

He still suggests controlling the type of carbs - no sugar, no highly refined carbs, no junk foods - but get your intake from fresh fruit and veg, whole grains etc. Which I should have thought was standard dietary advice in any case.

The best advice still has to be - be advised by your HCP.

Perhaps FoxyLady was confusing Ketosis with Ketoacidosis?
If a lowcarb/paleo diet was detrimental to the mental development of the foetus then perhaps the whole of mankind has a long heritage of mental under-development as I don't think that Paleo man and woman would have been able to access much more than meat (with fat), fish, plants and seeds.

You forgot to add 'in season', Clearviews! though there is some evidence that Palaeolithic people, particularly in Europe, stored food by drying and smoking, and also possibly by freezing when we got far enough north.

Did anyone else see the report on new research on rice that puts its first cultivation date, in China, at about 9,000 years ago?
