I was diagnosed type 2 last week. Put on Metformin slow release , starting on one 50ml every other day. Tomorrow i go to one a day for a week, then 2 a day.
Today i had terrible tummy pains and my period has started. I have a Mirena coil and not had one for 10 years!!!!
Is this usual?
My diabetic nurse said she would ring me today to see how i am doing. I do not have to see her for 3 months. But its gone 5pm now and she has not bothered calling.
I am 53 and thought i was going through menopause but i guess that could have been diabetis syptoms?

Hi airsair.

Bringing your BG down can affect hormone levels - it certainly did with me. However, any bleeding in post menopausal women or those using the Mirena coil needs investigating to rule out anything nasty, so make an appointment with your doctor asap to be on the safe side. Not every symptom, ailment or change is connected with diabetes just because we're diabetic!

I have been doing a bit of research on Metforin and found out it is used for ovulation problems with woman who are finding it difficult to conceive and those with pcod.. I found some posts from people saying that after years there periods have come back by taking it.
Wish the diabetic nurse had rang like she said she would. I could have put my mind at rest .Feeling a bit let down.
Told on phone i had diabetes, asked to come on to see nurse, told to loose weight and take tablets and see her in 3 months. Taking some getting used to.

the slow release can be taken once a day, or you can split them, it's up to you.
there is nothing else that works the same as metformin, it's unique. there are other drugs that will control your BG.

but your best bet is to get rid of the weight.
if you are keen, you can look up the Newcastle diet and find about the same chance as bariatric surgery of ~80% remission

@ally1 @airsair I was wondering about this too. I have a mirena, and been on metaformin for two months now and although my periods have thankfully not returned with full vengeance, I have definitely known about it this month, whereas normally I wouldn't be able to tell you whereabouts in my cycle I was at all. I'm seeing a diabetic nurse next week (first appointment) so will ask about that.

People who interrupt you when you're talking and people who won't listen.
It's used in PCOS for ovulation issues so it's possible it could have altered your hormone levels. It may be something transient, but best to get it checked out anyway. I've just started on Metformin for IR/PCOS but haven't noticed anything different.

@airsair Hi, I saw the diabetic nurse today, and asked her the question about Metformin and ovulation. She said no one had asked her that before and she did not know the answer, so nothing to report I'm afraid. At least she was honest. She did say that as it was used in other conditions it was possible that it would affect your hormones and that we should keep an eye on it.
