Is there a course I can do?

Hello, I'm newly diagnosed with Type 2 and although I've seen the diabetes nurse once, I wasn't offered a course to do. Is there one? I'm really struggling with every aspect of understanding abbreviations , what to eat, what not to eat, blood glucose readings etc. Many thanks in advance :)

I found it a waste of time as my area was still promoting the Eatwell plate - not something type 2s should follow as we struggle with carbohydrates not just obvious sugars.
I went low carb immediately and got my blood glucose (blood sugar, BG or BS) down into the normal range very quickly.
I bought a meter, and tested before then 2 hours after every meal to check how many carbs I could safely eat.
The GP surgery will do an HbA1c test which is an average over 3mths.
The meter does a finger prick test to show the current value.

Here is a link to blood ranges:

I've had no official help either, but have learned so much from here and other sites. This is the friendliest, so just ask away.
And remember it's a huge subject, no one gets it all first time. I'm still learning almost 2 years in, and probably always will be.

There are many courses but it depends very much on what dietary path you wish to take.
Many of us greatly reduced the carbohydrates we ate and put T2 into remission.

There are lots of worthwhile videos to watch one of those is

The late and great Dr Sarah Hallberg.

But there are also swathes on Low carb for T2 here

plus loads of extra information at www.dietdoctor.com

Hope that helps

I was diagnosed in April. I’m now struggling to stay on track. I would love a course too or help.

A welcome to a forum few really want to join.
But as said, it is friendly & to my mind the best choice anyone recently diagnosed (DX) can make.

Lots of good advice & pointers above .

For myself, my course (Desmond's ) was a good while after my DX.

By which time I had devoured as much of the information on here as possible .

Under the kind direction & guidance of so many, I had bought a meter (codefree but since updated it to the gluco navii from home health)

And i had begun low carbing AND seeing the resulting figure post meals & early morning testing ( our fasting blood sugar's FBG )

So rather gung ho at my course.

And severely disappointed at how poor I thought the guidance was.

I seemed to be only one or maybe 2/3 to have any idea of the impact carbs had.

Others seemed more then happy to take the eatwell plate guidance at face level & take the meds offered, so they could continue to eat pasties, cakes, etc .

I asked many questions, clear I was seen as a slightly disruptive influence, in some ways.

However a friendly discussion with tutors after course, revealed how restricted they are (were ?) In deviating from the guidelines laid out.

Upshot for me, I say go with an open mind
I found being amongst others with the same issue was nice.

But I had learned SO MUCH more from here, that was more relevant & practical to actually managing my T2D,
then meekly trying to assist me to accept...." it's a progressive disease & there's little that helps". :banghead:

And that's how I saw it.

I'd found a place where others had limited the impact of the disease.
And where it wasn't simply accepted we couldn't help ourselves in some way & where methods were explored & successes shared.

Proving proof of concept for me.

Good luck getting the course, I hope it's changed & more relevant.

But regardless of how it actually runs, I truly believe THIS forum is where I think most help is given, for those who come to listen.

if I could, I'd make it the very first prescription to EVERY T2D at DX.

best wishes on your journey.

I was diagnosed in July, wanted a course too, offered an online one which I turned down as prefer face to face. Given the eat well booklet which after finding this forum went straight in the bin! Have learned all I need to know on here from the people that are living the illness and know the answers. Have chosen a low carb route which is working well, just my own not one you pay for. Basically just cut out all bread, pasta, potato and rice and found the alternatives such as Bare Naked Noodles, and Bare Naked rice plus Cauliflower rice. You will find all the help you need on here, don't be afraid to ask.

To start with testing before and after meals is the way forward until you get to know what causes you the problems.

Good luck
