Im about 3 months in to being diabetic and ive heard that BG spikes arnt good so i want to try and avoid them. I carb count with a ratio of 1:10 and usually have anywhere from 3-8 units a meal, 4 is average (dinner typically has the highest amount or carbs).

I try to eat foods with a GI under 50, buts its not always easy. I will always avoid bread, rice, white potatos etc. But somethimes when i eat a high carb meal (60-80g) my BG spikes then comes back down to normal levels. So are there any helpfull tips i can use to stop these spikes, like bolusing in advance or splitting does etc.

Thanks

I’ve found that the best way to avoid spikes is just to minimise carbs. I’ve tried and tried and tried to get the timings right on when to inject and when I eat but just can’t seem to get it right often enough. Depending on about a million different factors, like stress, heat, tiredness, even time of the month, it can take 30-90 minutes for my insulin to start kicking in.

Many people seem to be able to bolus and wait for the insulin to kick in before they start to eat, but I’m cooking for and eating with my family and I just can’t seem to work around that. So I just knocked them out, and life is much simpler!

I was the same, my consultant moved me to fiasp this week and while I still spike slightly after breakfast (up to 9), lunch and dinner have pretty much flattened out.
Today I had a Cornish pasty and sausage roll for lunch (greedy pastry feast I know!) and barely moved above 7.

I bolus in advance but I mostly keep my carbs low enough not to bother. Makes life so much easier

Some generic stuff which might work. If you do some resistance exercise before eating, you can get insulin independent glucose uptake when you eat (providing you don't have muscle insulin resistance) - GLUT4 uptake, particularly large muscles such as quads, biceps and glutes.

You can go for a walk directly after eating, which is proven to soften blood glucose spikes. I have read that eating vegetables before the rest of the meal reduces spikes (
around 30 - 35 mins in).
