This week I’ve been waking up in the 6s. Bit unusual for me as usual am in 5s.

Yesterday I was 6.7.

To me that doesn’t seem high because it’s a low number but then we are supposed to under 8 after meals.

So is 6.7 high for a first thing not got out of bed yet reading?

Today back to normal as was 4.4.

Hi Cana

If you pop 'dawn phenomena' into the seachbox you'll see that it's quite common. Apparently the liver likes to dump glucose to get us up and raring to go, and it's one of the last numbers to be lowered in our quest to find balance. My daytime numbers tend to range 4.5-5.6 but I often wake 6.0-6.5

Hope that helps

Hiit does but I hadn’t got out of bed. So there was no activity for me body to dump sugar for.

If that was the case surely my usual readings would be higher.
If I get out of bed and start mooching then yes they go up a bit but not usually when I’m still in bed

Wrong ... they can rise overnight to prepare you for the day, regardless of what you're doing. You cannot predict a morning reading unless you REALLY ate the wrong foods at dinner or snacked where you'd expect a reading something above the norm

Liver dumps can happen anytime your body needs sugar and there is no food to get it from. It's a back up system to stop your sugar from going too low which would not be good. The one that happens at dawn is just the liver doing its job since you probably have not eaten for some hours. Some DN's recommend eating little and often to stop liver dumps. I am in writing somewhere saying that because of liver dumps I have doubts about the value of fasting readings especially since the test might not be done until the surgery appointment.

Type 2s should aim for an fbg of between 4-7, so readings in the 6s are ok.
My fbgs have been in the high 6s and up to 7.2 over the last week. There doesn't seem to be any particular reason, though I think it might be because I'm starting to get hayfever symptoms.
I do seem to get higher fbg readings from time to time, but they do return to the low 6s again. I don't worry about it as my pre-evening meal readings are usually in the 5s, and don't generally rise more than 2 mmol/L by two hours after eating.

This is very confusing. So if it’s dawn phenomenon which I understand why did I then wake up with a 4.4 today? Surely my liver should have dumped some sugar in my blood?

It’s only last few days it’s been in 6s otherwise (well since diagnosis when it was 15s etc it’s been 5s

Did you previously see 4's in the morning or was this an unusual reading? If it was unusual then I suggest you should have re-tested in case it was a rogue reading - which we all get from time to time.

Do you test before bed?

I guess 4.4 was a bit low but to be honest I felt not great so could have been. I don’t usually test that low first thing.
5.2 is my lowest I think.

I dont normally test before bed because I’ve fell asleep in sofa and just crawl up stairs to bed
After dinner I was 8.3 though

In that case, I suggest it was a falsely low reading, either a corrupted strip or something on your fingers. Or did you have alcohol at some point?
8.3 seems a bit high for after dinner though.

Every mammals pancreas and liver is constantly working together to create equilibrium, one always responds to the other in a wave form. One has to catch up with the other, it’s not a stop/start mechanism. Sounds like they are working in harmony for you.

Those promoting eating often and little are not T2D, but they soon will be. Eating often, even lightly triggers insulin production and you end up in a situation where your insulin level is always high, leading to insulin resistance.

I would like to point out that I don't advocate little and often but I have heard the advice given. Mind you they also said that diabetes was progressive and I would die.

I had a fairly low reading last night before bed... it was 6.8
I have been told "If it falls below 8" ... I should "Have a couple biscuits" which I did.
This morning my fbs upon waking was 9.1 That is the highest its been since I started testing daily 4 weeks ago.
So I retested this morning 30 mins later and it was down to 8. Still high.

My question is, what numbers are other's happy to 'go to bed' with?

I do fine all day then eat biscuits or have a banana before bed to raise my levels! above 8. I can't get my head round this yet?

(I should mention I am T2 on insulin injection, once in the evening just before bed)

I am either in the high fives or low sixes two hours after my evening meal, I do not have any thing else to eat till breakfast, I do drink coffee before breakfast just after my fbgl test.

Thank you for replying Tipetoo.
I am left feeling (at the moment) that it is not good to be that low before going to bed in case I have a hypo whilst I'm asleep.

On a side note I drive for a living so need to be 6 + really at the start of my day to ensure I stay above 5 whilst I drive. (for the next 2hrs before testing again)

Sorry I did not see you were on insulin, I just had a look at your sig, I do not use insulin that is why I answered as I did..

Thats fine, my bad, I should have said my friend.

It is all trail and error at the moment... This site is a godsend!

@poemagraphic. As a type 1 on insulin and wearing a Libre, it is surprising how a small amount of sugar raises levels. Perhaps try 1 biscuit if above 6 and 2 if around the 5 mark. And stay off the banana!
