Hi I was diagnosed only about a month ago and now on metformin 2 in a morn and 2 at night 2000 per day. Simvastatin once at night for the double chlorestrol I was diagnosed with. Query is, is it normal to have to wait 3 months before I know if what I'm now eating is helping or not. I have absolutely no idea if my blood sugar is the same or less than it was before the first visit to the doctors as they gave me nothing to test it with. Do people usually get testing urine strips or blood tests in the between time or is this just normal? So far as they know I could be eating all the wrong foods and putting it up even higher. No of course I'm not but I've no idea if I'm ok or not as before I had no symptoms and now I don't either.
Hubby has just been told he might be diabetic too , luckily I warned him if he was they put the fear of God into you with the reaction they give. He came back and told me I was correct they discovered his urine test was full of sugar and after that treat him like someone that was about to die.Does everyone get this reaction from their nurses and doctors?
I was so pleased Sid and Daisy and people like that were on here to help me when I first was diagnosed.I was devastated and sure I'd die in the next few days or so!. Since then I've met a few people that have had it years and this forum has been a great help to guide me what to eat.

I think the HCP's vary too much in the way they 'work' with diabetics but you need to read what Daisy1 will add to this thread as its all very sound advice.
Good luck to you and your husband.

Here is the link to the information Hobs was referring to which I posted for you on another thread, for ease of reference:

Hi. Yes, it's normal not to be offered a blood sugar meter and strips when diagnosed. It's really essential to get hold of one yourself either by asking one of the suppliers for a free meter or buying the SD Codefree from Amazon which has cheap strips. Buy your strips online anyway and you can get them VAT free from some sites. With the meter and the indo Daisy will post, you can start to manage your diet and weight. In 3 months your GP should do an HBa1C blood test to show how you have been doing

Hi thankyou for your replies thankyou for the advice Daibell , I'm kind of still sticking my head in the sand a bit curious but not really wanting to know results just yet also. On Metformin now 2000 a day plus simvastatin for the chlorestrol.Feel ok and cutting out a lot of carbs I used to consume. perhaps I'll sit back and wait a bit before I do test .I just wondered if I was supposed to have these strips people talk about .I suppose eventually I'll come out from under my rock and get the strips so thankyou for the advice. Meantime I'll exercise and be good and hopefully the next test will be better.
