Hi I went to see new diabetic nurse today as we have moved house.was hoping for better info than starch and carbs but nope..any way at the moment I'm on 500mg metformin and have got levels down to inbetween 5.6 and 7.8 if that makes sense. Not been higher this week at all. But the nurse insisted I have to increase the metformin to 2000 slowly .is this normal sorry if odd question but I did ask would she like to check my level and she said yep come next week for bloods and urine tests But you need to increase meds..I always thought if I got down to good levels I would not need to increase :-( was I being to silly..any way no prescription for strips or the needle bit either(as no need to test as type 2 grrrr

That does seem a bit Presumptuous. But I'm beginning to think that the majority of their paitents are probably the type of people that do just keep taking more and more meds to control diabetes, rather than us on here who would rather control our diet and therefore keep the meds down.

We must be a rare breed!!!! :p

I would suggest after you get the results of your next test, to have a discussion with her.

Hi Mrs, your numbers look good so I can't see why you would need to increase meds ! You deserve a pat on the back, not more tablets. I would have a chat and voice your concerns. Mo

Thank you that's a very good idea..she did say that once I've had bloods she will have a chat to me about diet and book me an eye test and such..just didn't want the extra meds really
Wanted diet to do it..

Perhaps I should say I do have a problem with abcess's that refuse to go away..I'm sat wondering is this why she has increased the meds ..I'm rather disapointed to say the least..but I refuse to give in

How long has it been since you changed your diet?

Have you got any weight to lose?

I just wondered if you had been given enough time to bring your levels down yet...

Cara

Hi I've had roughly about 3 weeks one 500mg metformin and about 5 weeks getting to grips with low carb and yes I've lost 21 lbs already but could loose another 2 stone to be in healthy weight ..

Hi, Mrs gimli,
I have not got much faith in your average diabetic nurse, simply because their training is rather behind modern requirements. I also believe you should discuss your problem with the abscess's with the Doctor and not a nurse.
Also you have done so well, which has got to be congratulated.
What you say makes more sense than the diabetic nurse which goes to prove that some nurses may be wrong.

Keep up your good work.

Thank you this nurse is the practice nurse and the diabetic nurse..
Without cutting carbs my levels were not dropping with cutting carbs my levels have dropped..
I simply don't understand why the nurses are so behind..
Surly if it works they must know..
Oh well back on monday for bloods and hope they show how well I'm doing

Sadly what you have found is the same for many of us i.e. the NHS doesn't have much understanding of diabetes; crazy but true. They are very good, however, at managing the long-term complications as a result of poor earlier advice. I agree with the other posters that 2000gm of Met seems excessive with your good blood sugar levels. Met is at it's best if you are overweight but less important if you are slim (so why am I on 2000gm of Met?)

Well I suppose I could be classed as over weight in accordance with the nation statistics .I need to loose another two stone to be in the helthy zone so I wonder if this is her thinking
