I would like to know where most Type 1s get their diabetes care? There is a move in my area for all type 1s to be seen at GP surgeries only (unless they have a pump).

In the case of my GP surgery - this means only seeing a practice nurse once a year for a very basic assessment. I feel this isn't exactly good care compared to the care you get at the hospital where you can see doctors and nurses who have expertise in diabetes.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Do you get your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital?

Hi goji,

I get all my diabetes care direct from my GP. I have an annual review where they do a full blood test, check my feet and so on. I see the practice nurse, who specialises in diabetes, and my GP who also specialises in diabetes. I then have a mini review half way through the year where I see the practice nurse for a blood test and quick catch up.

To be honest, I have found this to be a lot better than going to a diabetes clinic. The option to see them more regularly is there if I need it. My retinopathy screening is still done separately.

Hope this helps!

Re: Do you get your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital?

Sorry had voted before noticed was for T1. I am T2 and although under hospital it is not Care as never seen same doc twice in row  . My GP does look after me, no probs so far wrt strips  .

Re: Do you get your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital?

It's OK Fergus.....I have edited the title so it is clearly for T1 only now. Goji will just have to subtract 1 from the results.........

Re: Do you get your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital?

Err, sorry you will have to remove two as I didnt realise this was for T2's only as I only read the 'Actice Topics' and never look at which boards they are on I voted both PG & Hosp.

If its any help though, when I was on insulin I was under the Hospital but when I came off insulin and as my numbers were stable I was signed over to my GP, who probably knows less than I do about diabetes  Still he's a nice bloke and very sympathetic to my requests for strips etc.

My Yearly retinal scan is still carried out at the hospital though...

Re: Do you get your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital?

Erm you will have to remove 3 as i didnt notice this was just for T1 either

Is your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital? TYPE ONE ONLY

OK Folks.....managed to get TYPE 1 ONLY in the main heading !!!!!

Do you want a response for children or is this adult care only?

GP and hospital - I insisted the GP refer me to the consultant at the hospital when my hba1c kept rising, they diagnosed me type 1, and I've kept going for check ups at the hospital now. I'm moving soon, I hope the treatment for diabetes in the new place is OK.

Hi guys

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far - adults, children - anyone who is a Type 1 is welcome to answer the poll.

I don't mind about type 2s who have posted - it was my (wrong!) assumption that only Type 1s got to go to the hospitals so I didn't know if my question applied to anyone other than type 1s.

Thanks again for answering

Goji

I see the GP during term time at uni and the team at the hospital when I'm at home in the holidays...though actually I haven't seen them for quite a while :? ...so mostly GP based these days!

My GP doesn't want to know anything about my diabetes since going to a pump, as he says he knows nothing about them at all!!!!

I've ticked hospital only because they make the decisions. My GP only provides the repeat prescriptions. My GP respects my preference for hospital care, because DAFNE was the first thing in 30 yrs that got me under control and I couldn't have done it without attending the hospital clinic.

However, the GP's computer tries to interfere. It sends me forms and appointments for blood tests and a 'diabetic review' with their (useless) nurse every April. I cancel the appointments and tell them the date I had the bloods done at the hospital, the results will be on the computer. If I didn't cancel, they'd repeat everything - what a waste of tax-payers money.

I just have an annual prescription review with my GP which is a compulsory box-ticking exercise and IMO a waste of an appointment. It could be done by phone but they insist I take up an appointment that a sick person could use.

Can you tell it winds me up? Rant over!

Hospital does everything apart from repeat prescriptions.

Meant to be Hospital care but we have not been taught anything yet. Just phone hospital they will tell us dosage and get on with it. Hoping things will improve in the future as we have only due to research and this site started carb counting etc.

Hospital does everything but my repeat prescriptions at the moment. I have a 'medication review' from the dr every year, but that simply conducts of my dr going:
'Are you on...' Yep.
'Are you still on...' Yep
'Right, so no changes from...' Nope
And then a:
'Right then, see you next year!'

I get no podiatry check ups, checks on my eyes or neuropathic check ups, even though I suffer from from long term complications of my nerve.
My doctors don't even offer my HBA1C blood tests, which mean 2 bus rides to my hospital rather than a 5 minute walk down then road.
My doctors advertise their diabetic service, however after enquiring, the doctor who specialises in it is educated in T2, rather than T1, meaning I can't go there.
