It can be done

Hello - just wanted to share my story. Was diagnosed as pre diabetic 12 months ago and didn't do much about it and sure enough got diagnosed with diabetes in March with a score of 48. Didn't want to go on meds so told the nurse I would tackle it with diet. Took a few days to get my head round it and reading posts on this forum helped that and got me focussed.

Stopped eating potatoes, white pasta, white rice and white bread. Ate wholemeal bread on occasions, brown pasta and rice. Worked on portion control, ate an apple for breakfast and for lunch often had tin of mackerel (in olive oil) with a few salad items. Dinner would often be chicken or salmon for veg. Wanted to hit it hard and get to 47 or below. Have had the occasional pizza and proper curry but less than one a month

Openly talked to my family and they really helped. Have lost two and a half stone (much needed) since March.

Had 6 month blood test on Monday and got the result today and it is 40 and I am a very happy man. Not planning on going back to potatoes, white rice, pasta and bread but will have other items in moderation.

Not here to brag, just wanting to bring hope and show it can be done .

It isn't bragging. It's a welcome success story. I was diagnosed in the last week of April this year with a reading of 107. Had my follow-up test the first week of September, and I'm now at 32. A 65-point drop in 18 weeks....and I'm so glad I came across this place.

I am far from being the ultra low carber that some are (my version of low carb is around 60-80g per day rather than 20) , but I embraced the principle of a diet higher in fat and protein and lowered my carb intake by probably 70%. This meant me ditching all the 'healthy' foods I'd been eating for decades such as wholemeal bread, skimmed milk, low fat yogurts and spread, etc...and introducing full fat milk, butter, cheese and Greek yoghurt; while all of my bread now comes from srsly and carbzone.

Out went pizza, crisps, biscuits, cake, custard, sweets, pasta, and the like. I've had a takeaway once in 5 months, and while it was perfectly nice, it didn't make me want for more. I wasn't overweight when I was diagnosed, I was 12 1/2 stone, at 6 ft tall (5' 11" 1/2 sometimes, lol). However, I've lost 1.5 stone in the last 5 months. I haven't been 11st since I was 18, and I'm 54 now.

You're right...it's all achievable. I walk around 25-30 miles per week, and my wife, who has joined me on my new eating and walking regime (even though she isn't diabetic), has shed over 2 stones in weight.

I'm not a big poster on the forum, but in the early weeks I was an avid reader, and I took on board the experiences of people who had achieved great results and found my own tailored version. Onwards and upwards
 
Can I ask how long it took to see a decline in your readings? I have dramatically changed my diet to, with reducing the carbs you refer to. I seem to be struggling with a high reading in the morning with it dropping throughout the day. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear you are struggling with a high reading. I cannot be of much help as I did not take any readings myself. I had two blood tests 6 months apart and nothing in between. Hopefully someone else on here can be more help

How high is high? The dawn phenomena (where the liver pumps out sugar early in the morning) means that some people have an unexpectedly high level in the morning....

Hello and a warm welcome to the forum.

How long it'll take to reach a normal FBG is a question none of us can answer. We're all different. If you keep to a low carb, healthy fat lifestyle [LCHF], you'll get there, but it takes a while.
 
My readings are in the late 6’s within 20 minutes of getting up. I believe it maybe put down to poor sleeping and continually worrying. This increasing cortisol and thus the release of glucose for the fight or flight syndrome. If that makes sense.
