Hi,

My mum is a type 2 diabetic. She itches a lot on her hands and feet mainly at the moment. Although she can get the itches everywhere. She has tried various creams but none seem to work. Does anybody else suffer with excess itching?

Sounds like it might be high blood sugars?
How's her control..? Fungal infections can be a sign of excess blood glucose.

Hi there:

Yes, I've also suffered from very itchy calves and backs of hands just before and just after my type 2 diagnosis. My DSN told me that it was highly likely as a result of the high sugar levels coursing through me.

Now I'm averaging 6 to 6.5 mmol on my three daily tests, the itch has gone...

One cream that did help me can be had at John Lewis - it's called Origins Precipitation Extra. Also - my DSN subsequently told me some creams are available on prescription - so might be worth your mother asking too?

All the best!

She has very good control of her diabetes her hba1c is within range. She’s had many creams prescribed that don’t work. She also has to be careful when scratching as she has leg ulcers and by scratching it could cause one.

Ask her medical team if anti histamine tablets or cream would help, they numb the nerve ends.
I get burning itching in my arms from an old injury, it is the only treatment that works for me.

Keep safe.
