Folks,

I have a little confession to make.....

I never eat food on my nogo list and I havent "binged" on alcohol since diagnosis. Well a new hotel opened up in our town and they had a 24 hour special offer - Xmas party with 3 course meal, band and DJ all for £15, so I arranged a family party!.
The "do" was last night. I arrived fully intending to eat and drink selectively, when something triggered in my head and my guard dropped. I ate everything on my plate, spuds, parsnips, carrots, turkey, cranberry sauce, mince pies, quiche starter and cheese and biscuits. I drank 5 pints of Coors Light a large glass of red and a double gin and tonic!!......just like in the bad old days and I wont be doing it again for a long time....honest
However, I have been experimenting with breads lately and even one slice of any bread sends my BG into the 8's (usually around 5 or 6 post meal), so I did a test on my return home fully expecting a 12, 15 or whatever. I winced as my Aviva Nano commenced its 5 second countdown. And the result??
6.1  :D . I retested to confirm and this morning my fasting BG was 5.4. Bear in mind that I am off medication as my HBA1C last month had dropped to 5.6.
I am totally ashamed of myself for last nights events, but delighted that my diabetic pancreas looked after me so efficiently!. I would however love to understand the mechanics of how a couple of hundred grams of carbs didnt send my BG into the stratosphere!.

All the best - Steve.

Hi Steve.

Well.....what a night you had. Great to hear your Bg was fine after all that. I think because you have lost so much weight you are able to handle more carbs now. That's basically what has happened to me....lost nearly 5 stone and can now eat pasta, bread and various other forbidden fruits, fish/chips etc.

Look on the bright side, you might not do it every week.....but what the hell....at least you know you can.

Enjoy your Christmas mate. :D

Steve,

Did well to get such low results after a carb feast!

I would have been in double figures without a doubt; it would seem your pancress is still serving you well. Use to enjoy a Gin and tonic many years back when I was courting my good lady, now my tipple to round the night off is a nice cognac, even more pleasing when it is bought for you! :D

Regards

Nigel

Ahhh Grasshopper the complexities of life....In order to be able to eat and enjoy these forbidden fruits, we must first not eat them !

Spot on, which for me is when Diabetes becomes less of an inconvenience and more of a nudging elbow to keep tabs on our health.
