It's like politics

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
Politics is said to be the art of the possible.
That's how I now see diabetic diet.
I think many, if not most, of us wouold agree that the fewer carbs you eat, the better.
We know that zero carbs is difficult to achieve. ( it's been shown not to be harmful)
Some of us have found we can adapt to low carb 30g -50g per day fairly easily. I do that most days, but do occasionally slide off the wagon. I had the batter off the "chippie" fish on Friday and a chip or 2
Some people find this doesn't suit them.perhaps because the don't want to give up most carbs and can cope with some.
Some people, mainly insulin users, find they prefer to eat what they like and "Cover" with medication.
The only thing that is certain to most of us is that good control means low BG numbers, lower than the medics and Diabetes Uk quote.
My aim and that of a good few is to achieve HbA1cs in the 5s. That is near the non-diabetic norm of about 4.6%
Many medics would regard that as impossible or caused by multiple hypos.
It's up to us to prove them wrong.

I ended up reading about Gastric Band/Bypass Surgery - not sure how I got there, but it wasn't intentional.

Aparently, a lot of Type 2 Diabetics that undergo any type of gastric surgery are "cured". They actually used the word cure throughout when referring to Type 2 Diabetics.

AND - it seems that it's not JUST the result of a massively restricted intake of food (actual VOLUME of food - not calorific amount of food), but that the process of shrinking the stomach actually causes the body to produce peptides that aid in the control of BG levels.

I'm seriously looking into going private and getting this. Looks like it's gonna run me about £6k. I always said the best money I ever spent was the £4k it cost to get my eyes lasered 3 years ago, but if they offered me a cure for £6k I'd snap their hand off!!!

They say that around 80% of Type 2's show perfectly normal BG levels within 2months of the surgery. Well before they've lost all of the weight...

Now - onto the BIG question (actaully related to the thread title - Politics)...

Will Gastric Surgery be seen as a method of curbing the Diabetes Epidemic of the west - or would they rather keep lining the pockets of the big drugs companies by forcing semi-effictive drugs onto us???

I don't know why or If it works and don't have 6K to spend(I'm an OAP), but i would think that most PCTs would raher fund the dru companies than provide this surgery. AND how fit and well controlled do you have to be to cope with elective surgery?

Sue if by cutting out part of the intestine affects the hormones and signalling etc surely there is a big clue that something needs looking at .

The bypass restricts the amount of food and also malabsorption occurs because there is a reduction of about 1.5 m. of the intestine. This is the part that is bypassed.
Personally I think it is less effective than lowering your weight by diet. On a diet you can eat a good variety of foods and providing you don't overdo the amounts it is achievable. Once you get to your goal you are still enjoying your foods, let's face it, eating is a pleasure and not a chore for most of us. The secret is to find a diet that works for you and that is sustainable and one where you do not feel deprived.

Just picked this one up again, Gugill im with you had Liver n Onions n Streaky bacon the weekend yummers.

Sue if i was of a more sensitive disposition Ifeel sure i would find something very hurtfull in the reference to grey matter. The only time i had trouble with brains was when my missus used to tell me it was her turn to use it. Then i knew trouble was brewing :D

I think it was more to do with absorption,Dave.

Actually he's right, a friend elsewhere threw up a lot of research on this, it does appear to alter some signalling system. Hopefully this may when further studied lead to other nonsurgical techniques for adjusting the same system. Of course low carbing may also affect the same system, but my friend is one of those who tends to overeat *everything* not just carbs which is why he has been doing this research.

Actually it's more like economics than politics. Carbs are more profitable. The people who make the profit from carbs support the ADA, AHA, DUK etc. etc as do the people who make the drugs to alleviate the symptoms of eating too many carbs. So it ain't going to go away any time soon :(
